Free For All

image

I apologize to my readers as business is going quite well right now and I’m finding little time (and motivation) to devote to blogging about baseball right now (especially since I’m way more interested in the Twins).

It was an interesting weekend – the Augustana vs. Wayne State pair of games tomorrow should be big, especially for the Vikings.  Winona State at Upper Iowa and Duluth at Minnesota State are not gimmies for the higher ranked teams either.

The Free For All?  In addition to the teams on the field, it’s up to the readers to have it out with each other and keep the thread going this week.

Now – back to selling houses where I finished up a deal for a buyer yesterday and am negotiation on an offer for a seller I represent today. 🙂

Players of the Week & Where We Stand

Players Of The Week

The Northern Sun Conference has named its Players of the Week for the 7th week.  For the 2nd week in a row a Minnesota Duluth player wins an award.  In an interesting twist, Charlie Dubanoski and Augustana’s only loss of the week was to Gary Wilfahrt Jr. – NSIC Week 7 Release

Charlie Dubanoski helped the Vikings go 8-1 last week. Dubanoski posed a .548 average, going 17 of 31. He collected 15 RBI on the week after belting three homeruns. Also, five of his hits on the week were doubles and he also had one triple. One of his best games of the week came against Concordia-St. Paul on Sunday, where he was 2 for 5 with both of his hits being homeruns. He recorded five RBI in that game. He was also 3 for 3 against the Golden Bears the game before, recording one double and batting in two. He had no errors and 28 putouts on the week.

Gary Wilfahrt, Jr., was a perfect 2-0 in his pair of starts last week as he picked up non-conference wins over Augustana (3-2) and U-Mary (5-1). The Bulldog team co-captain maintained a 2.25 earned run average, working 12 innings (including a complete game performance in game one against Mary) while allowing seven hits. The righty gave up only three runs, striking out 12 batters while surrendering just two free passes. Opponents mustered a paltry .171 batting average against the hurler.

Week 1 Conference Standings

image

The first week of NSIC play is in the books and the teams you expected to win did so.  The top 4 teams had big offensive outputs as they scored a combined 199 runs in the 16 games for an average of more than 12 runs/game.  These included –

  • Wayne State 19, Bemidji State 2
  • Minnesota State 21, Northern State 0
  • St. Cloud State 27, Minnesota Crookston 0

The biggest impact of the weekend wasn’t that St. Cloud State, Minnesota State and Augustana are 4-0.  It’s that 1 loss by Wayne State.  While losing a game to Bemidji is nothing to feel bad about, it may prove costly at the end of the season where there looks to be a much more competitive set of teams at the top of the standings.

We should know more this coming week when more teams are in action, although it’s interesting that none of the very top teams are really playing each other.  The best matchup is probably Minnesota State vs. Upper Iowa who is a bit of a mystery this year but is usually quite competitive.

Northern Sun Update – March 4, 2010

1000

First off in this weeks update – Congratulations to Wow!!  He posted the 1,000th comment to be heard on Northern Sun Baseball.  Thanks to all those members who continue to add value even when I hardly post (at least I did sell 4 listings in the last 5 days and have 3 offers to present on another house tonight).

Every team has now played at least a couple games and here’s what we know so far –

  • Only 5 of the 13 teams have an above .500 record
  • Upper Iowa, the only team to yet win a game, continues for the 2nd year in a row to have numerous spring games cancelled due to weather.  Peacock Season in Holding Pattern
  • Winona State’s Ross Hellenbrand and Tony Mueller are very good.  They led the Warriors to a sweep of pre-season favorite Wayne State in a non-conference doubleheader (as well as a split with SCSU).  The team plays a really tough spring road trip with games against 2009 D2 Champion, Lynn, and 2010’s #1 ranked team, Florida Southern as well as games against Minnesota State.  Warriors Sweep Wayne
  • Speaking of Minnesota State, they lost both ends of a doubleheader to Bemidji State?  The Beavers did get swept by the Mavericks the day before but this was quite the surprise result.  Bemidji has already played 16 games and while their record is solid, most of their previous wins had come against conference weaklings (Northern State & Crookston) although they did win a game against St. Cloud as well.  Beavers Steal 2 From Mavs
  • Minnesota State’s doubleheader sweep of the Beavers the day before was led by a dominating performance by sophomore pitcher, Blake Schwartz.  The right hander from Rosemount, MN threw a complete game giving up just 1 hit and 1 HBP to move to 2-0 on the season.  Schwartz Hurls 1 Hitter
  • Wayne State has been up and down so far this year but their 7-3 win over 2009’s National D2 Runner-up, Emporia State, was quite impressive.  Five Run Inning Boosts WSC
  • Augustana is off to a slow start.  The surprise team of 2009 has started the season at 5-7 but 2 of those were blowout wins over an overmatched Morningside College.  The team has given up 8 or more runs in 5 of its 7 losses so far.  Vikings 0-2 Against Drury

This week starts the spring break trips for many of the Northern Sun teams so there will be lots of games in a short window with lots of players getting playing time as coaches figure out their Conference lineups.

D2 College Baseball & Northern Sun Updates – Feb 23, 2010

image

We are 3 weeks into the NCAA D2 college baseball season and all but 1 team in the Northern Sun Conference (Mary) have gotten games in.  The Metrodome continues to be used night and day by teams trying to deal with the generally crappy playing conditions all over the Midwest.

Dan Bauer went 9-for-15, a .600 batting average, in the four-game sweep of Northern State in a nonconference series at the H.H.H. Metrodome Sunday (10-2, 17-4) and Monday (4-2, 4-3 (8)). Two of those nine hits were game-winners, both coming in Monday’s doubleheader with the game tied, two outs and in the late innings (bottom 6th in game one and top 8th in game two). He had a team-high in hits and tied a team-high in RBI in the four games with seven. Bauer added three runs, hit his first home run of the season and recorded a double. He stole one base, recorded 11 assists and six putouts playing second base, going all four games without an error. He recorded at least one hit and one RBI in each contest, going a perfect 3-for-3 in the second game of Sunday’s doubleheader, adding three RBI and two runs scored.

Patrick Lenton earned his first win of season in MSU’s season opener, a 7-4 victory at Colorado Christian on Feb. 19th. He gave up one earned run in six innings of work. He fanned nine batters and limited the Cougars to just three hits in the game. He now stands 15-3 at MSU in his career.

Northern Sun Games Last Weekend

Augustana goes 3-1 over the weekend at the Metrodome against Morningside and Nebraska Kearney – Vikings go 3-1

Bemidji State crushes Northern State in first 2 games and then barely holds on to sweep the 4 game series – Beavers Sweep 4

Concordia Split with Nebraska Kearney – Furrow Walk-Off – Bears Split

Minnesota State travels all the way to Colorado for 3 games where they went 2-1 against Colorado Christian – Mav’s Upend Cougars 9-1

In perhaps the best contests, St Cloud State and Winona State split a pair at the Metrodome giving us no clear indication of who’s better.  Huskies Earn Split

Upper Iowa lost 2 to Wayne State scoring only 1 run in each contest.  This helped the WSC fans feel a lot better but causes some concerns for the Peacocks.  Peacocks Drop First 2

Upcoming Northern Sun Action

This weekend will be a great opportunity to see Northern Sun action at the Metrodome in Minneapolis.  On both Friday & Saturday there are a pair of NSIC doubleheaders – Wayne State vs. Winona State and Bemidji State vs. St. Cloud State.   In addition, Minnesota State plays UW-Parkside there on Saturday in a DH to make 14 hours straight of Northern Sun games.

Concordia plays a couple doubleheaders at the Dome this week, Wednesday against St. Johns and Thursday against Kansas Wesleyan.

Augustana and Upper Iowa are both scheduled to travel to play games in Missouri on Saturday.

NCAA Division 2 College Baseball Polls

Both PING! and College Baseball News have updated their polls for the week ending on February 21st.  Each of them agree on the top 3 teams in the country –

  • College Baseball News dropped Emporia State from the top spot all the way down to #10 because of a 8-10 loss to Central Oklahoma.  Southern Arkansas had been tied for first last week but dropped to #2 while sweeping all 3 games they played during the week against West Florida, a team receiving votes in this poll.  Taking over the top spot is Florida Southern (11-0) who plastered Pace University this weekend outscoring them by 68-8 in a 4 game sweep.  The Northern Sun Conference’s Wayne State dropped all the way out of the poll after starting the year ranked #14 in the country and now find themselves out of the top 63.  Minnesota State & Southwest Minnesota State did pick up 1 vote, as they did last week, and St. Cloud State makes a 3rd NSIC team on the list with 1 vote.  College Baseball News D2 Poll
  • PING Baseball also had changeover at the top as they dropped their previous #1 team, UC San Diego, to the #7 spot.  The Tritons (11-3) split their 4 game weekend series against Chico State, who moved into the poll at #19.  Florida Southern, Southern Arkansas and Francis Marion are the top 3 in each of the polls.  There are no Northern Sun teams in the PING poll – Ping Baseball D2 Poll

NSIC Office Finds NO Worthy Players and Other News

Blind Ump

Last year, during the preseason, I called out the Northern Sun Conference for their choice for Pitcher of the Week.  Last Years Rant

I guess they were concerned I’d do that again so this week they made the decision to not name a Player or Pitcher of the Week under the excuse that not enough games were played.  NSIC Week 2 Release

So was anyone worthy this week?  How about –

  • Wayne State’s Nick Bidroski goes 4-4 in his doubleheader with 2 runs scored, 3 RBI’s.  His 4 hits included a homer and 2 doubles.
  • Augustana’s Nate Baumann goes 5-8 with 3 runs and 2 RBI’s
  • Augustana’s Charlie Dubanoski goes 4-5 with 2 runs scored and 5 RBI’s to go with a stolen base and throwing out a base stealer

Those seem like pretty good efforts to me and worthy of recognition!

That said, the only pitcher worth mentioning was Austen Wisroth of Wayne State who pitched 1 2/3 innings of shutout ball with 3 strikeouts.

Other News

Wayne State has changed their schedule to accommodate the poor Midwest weather conditions.  They are playing 2 against Upper Iowa today at the Metrodome and have cancelled this weekends trip to Pittsburg State in Kansas.  Wayne State Schedule Changes

NCBWA 2010 Division II Preseason All-American Baseball Teams Announced

NCBWA Logo

The National College Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) released their NCAA Division II Preseason All-American Baseball Teams on Tuesday this week.  They named a First Team, Second Team, Third Team and Honorable Mention Team for the upcoming 2010 baseball season.  In all, 12 players from the Northern Sun Conference were named to the teams.  Those players were:

First Team:

  • Third Baseman – Matt Bauer, Sr, Southwest Minnesota State

Second Team:

  • Second Baseman – Seth Fox, Sr, Upper Iowa
  • Outfielder – Nate Baumann, Jr, Augustana
  • Starting Pitcher – Logan Birr, So, St. Cloud State

Third Team:

  • First Baseman – Andrew Kinney, Sr, Southwest Minnesota State
  • Utility Player – Brenden Furrow, Sr, Concordia St. Paul
  • Starting Pitcher – David Deminsky, Sr, St. Cloud State
  • Relief Pitcher – Bret Severtson, Sr, Augustana

Honorable Mention:

  • Outfielder – Tom Longoni, Sr, Upper Iowa
  • Utility Player – Lucas Wilsing, Sr, Upper Iowa
  • Pitchers – Patrick Lenton, Sr, Minnesota State  &  Adam Scrader, Sr, Southwest Minnesota State

As is typical, when a team is announced one of the first things to do is look and see if the Writers got it right.  Right away the Northern Sun Baseball Blog readers started commenting about the immediate injustice of leaving Wayne State’s Joe Wendte off of the team.  Wendte was recognized as the Northern Sun Conference Player of the Year in 2009 and was on the NCBWA Third Team All-American Team for 2009 (higher than any other Northern Sun player).  In reading the fine print for the award I did notice that players needed to be nominated by their school’s Sports Information Director.  Earlier today I verified that Wayne State’s SID mistakenly missed the deadline and therefore, Wendte’s name was never submitted.  Kind of a shame for a player that would most certainly have been 1st or 2nd team as he had a better year than Nate Baumann did who made the Second Team squad.

The one player that jumps out at me as maybe not belonging on this list would be Lucas Wilsing of Upper Iowa who was nominated as a Utility Player.  Wilsing didn’t make the NSIC 1st or 2nd team All-Conference Teams in 2009 and there are a number of players that jump out at me that would have been better choices (although I’m not sure they were nominated).  Anders Engberg (Minnesota Duluth) had stats as both a pitcher and batter that exceeded Wilsing and he was 2nd team All-Conference.  Tony Mueller of Winona State is another player that might have been a better batter/pitcher option as he was a much better hitter than Wilsing, although not as good on the mound.  It’s fun to debate anyway.

On another note, I did confirm that Eric Bond, Wayne State’s 2009 Newcomer of the Year and a key offensive contributor, will not be back with the team in 2010.

Upper Iowa University – 2010 Baseball Schedule

Upper Iowa

Upper Iowa University has posted their baseball schedule for the upcoming 2010 baseball season – Upper Iowa 2010 Baseball Schedule

The Peacocks spend the bulk of their non-conference schedule playing in Missouri and Kansas.  They will be hoping for better weather this year as the squad had 12 non-conference games wiped out by bad weather last year.  The team doesn’t have a spring trip to a warm climate so they are more at the mercy of good spring weather.  They do have a 3 game set against Wayne State (although Wayne’s schedule shows it as 2 games) which should be a good test but the rest of the schedule is a little less taxing as none of their opponents ranked higher than #66 in last year’s Boyd’s D2 Power Rankings.

The team doesn’t have Northern Sun Conference games against Wayne State, Concordia, St. Cloud State & Northern State.  They should be in the mix again for a top 6 spot in the standings which they secured on the last day of the regular season last year.
