Time To Vote!

We are just days away from the start of the Northern Sun Conference regular season games.  Will it be Wayne State winning the NSIC regular season title for the 7th straight year or will their early season challenges translate into opportunity for some other team to capture the crown?  Take your turn to vote in our poll to the right –>

Players Of The Week

While I’ve seen some criticize the choice of a 3rd Minnesota State player already this season, I find it hard to fault either of this week’s selections.  Tyler Erickson had an amazing 4 games in Florida and Bret Mitchell totally shut down a team ranked in Division 2’s Top 15.  NSIC Week 6 Press Release

Tyler Erickson got off to a hot start in UMD’s Florida spring trip, going a combined 9-for-12 (.750) at the plate in the team’s first four games. He had two games with three or more hits, including a 4-for-4 performance in the Bulldogs’ first game of a doubleheader sweep against Wayne State (Mich.), on Sunday March 14. Erickson was also a perfect 6-for-6 in stolen base attempts while not registering a strike out.

Bret Mitchell tossed a nine-inning complete game and earned first career shut-out as Minnesota State downed Ashland 4-0 March 9th in Florida. He scattered four hits and walked one batter while striking out 11.

Tune in to Minnesota State v. Wayne State Live

I’ve been watching a couple D2 college baseball games online this afternoon.

One of the games to watch is Nebraska – Kearney who Northern Sun fans should be rooting for to sweep Colorado State – Pueblo.  Right now Kearney leads 7-4 in the 5th inning with bases loaded.  A win by Kearney might drop Pueblo behind a couple NSIC teams in the NCAA Regional poll.  Pueblo vs. Kearney Live

Of course the big Northern Sun game is Wayne State hosting Minnesota State.  The Wildcats took an early lead with 3 straight home runs in the bottom of the first inning but Minnesota State scored 7 runs in the 2nd inning on 8 hits to take a 7-3 lead.  You can follow their doubleheader here – Mavericks vs Wildcats Live

Edit – No sooner had I posted this than Wayne State launched their 4th solo home run of the game to get the score to 7-4.

3:34pm Edit – Wayne State has scored 3 runs so far in the bottom of the 4th inning to get the score to 8-7.

Minnesota State won game 1 of their Sunday doubleheader, winning 13-10, despite 5 home runs by Wayne State (all solo blasts).  Also, Nebraska – Kearney did Northern Sun teams a huge favor by sweeping 4 games against Colorado State Pueblo this weekend as they won 13-4.  Pueblo almost has to fall below Minnesota State in the NCAA Central Region Rankings and it’s possible WSU and/or SMSU may even pass them.

Northern Sun Blog – Readers Pick Champion

The first ever poll on the Northern Sun Blog wrapped up today.  The question was – Which Northern Sun team will win the NSIC regular season Championship?

The readers have spoken and the winner is Concordia!

They were followed by Minnesota State and Wayne State.  Those 3 teams were the 3 teams at the top of the preseason NSIC coaches poll conducted in January.

Of course, this poll was totally unscientific and many people may have used it to vote on their favorite team instead of which team they truly feel will win the Championship.  I think you’d find it hard to get people to really pick Augustana if there were something on the line.

In addition, SW Minnesota State didn’t garner many votes but that may because they started their season so late and most regular readers may have already voted in the poll before seeing the Mustangs get off to a blazing 8-0 start.

My thanks to the 62 voters – I’ll definitely use the poll feature again to gather opinions and feedback.
