image

The 2010 NCAA D2 College World Series kicks off on Saturday May 22nd in Cary, NC.  Eight teams will compete in a double elimination format tournament with a final Championship Game scheduled for Saturday May 29th.  The interactive bracket above will be updated here – NCAA Interactive Bracket

You can also watch many of the games live online by going to the bracket (via the link above) clicking on a game, and then clicking on the little camera icon.

Rankings

College Baseball News has released their updated rankings heading into the College World Series –

Bracket 1 is made up of the top 4 ranked teams while Bracket 2 contains teams ranked #6,9,11 and 13.  The winner of Bracket 1 will have a grueling road to the Championship Game and should be favored to win it but anything can happen in a 1 game, winner take all format.  NCAA Division 1 baseball uses a similar double elimination bracket structure but then pits the final 2 teams in a best of 3 series which seems like a little better system to identify the best team.

Minnesota State Update

The Minnesota State Mavericks will be representing the Northern Sun Conference and have been a team we’ve been covering all season.  They’ve been on quite a roll

As well as they’ve done, the main storyline for their potential success might very well be around their pitching.  While they won the Central Region Tournament, they did so with strong hitting.  They actually won 3 of 4 games while giving up 39 runs in those last 4 games to advance.  Most importantly, their star pitcher all year, Blake Schwartz, has suddenly become very hittable.  Schwartz won every Central Region & NSIC award as Pitcher of the Year during the regular season with a 10-1 record and a 2.69 ERA.  During his 2 postseason appearances he’s 0-1 with a 12.60 ERA.

The athletic department will be updating a Mavericks College World Series Blog several times a day – Maverick CWS Blog

A 5 Horse Race Shaping Up in Northern Sun & NCAA D2 Presidents Hate Sports

image

While it seems like the Northern Sun Regular Season just got started we are actually approaching the halfway mark (each team is scheduled for 32 games).  At this point of the season it looks like a 5 team race for the top spot and quite possibly a 5 team race for the 6th and final spot in the Northern Sun Postseason Tourney.

Top 5 Race

St. Cloud State and Winona State sit atop the standings with only 1 loss each.  While the Huskies technically lead you need to factor in their weaker schedule so far.  Minnesota State has looked like they might be the best team but split a doubleheader against Minnesota Duluth on Wednesday to drop a game behind those 2 in the loss column.  Wayne State swept their midweek set against Augustana to keep themselves in the title hunt and drop the Vikings into 4th.  Had Augustana reversed the result it might have eliminated the Wildcats from the Conference title.  Keep in mind that they won it last year with just 4 losses.

News of Note

  • Minnesota State may be in 3rd place but they are ranked in all 3 national polls coming in at #24 in the Coaches College Baseball News poll, #23 in the Writers NCBWA poll and #25 in the PING Baseball poll (which gives very little credit to NSIC teams).  Mavericks in polls
  • St. Cloud State isn’t ranked in 2 of the polls but does beat out Minnesota State in the NSCBWA poll coming in at #13 for the 2nd week in a row.  Huskies Ranked #13
  • In what may be the most important news for NSIC teams – it’s looking more and more possible that the Northern Sun Conference could possibly get 4 of the 6 spots in the NCAA Central Region Tourney.  Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference teams are struggling.  Only New Mexico Highlands, Mesa State and Metro State have above .500 records in the RMAC and Metro has a 15-14 overall record.  Nebraska Kearney has a decent 20-14 overall record but is only 9-10 in RMAC games.  RMAC Week 10 Release  Northern Sun teams hold 4 of the top 5 spots in the most recent NCBWA Central Region poll – NCBWA Regional Polls

NCAA At It Again

Finally, the NCAA is doing it’s very best to neuter Division II sports even more.  They recently implemented their new “Life in Balance” project which cut down the number of athletic contests in many sports, including baseball.  Starting next year Division 2 baseball goes from 56 maximum games to 50.  On March 31st they announced phase 2 of their effort –

presidents and chancellors promised to extend the balance-driven review to other aspects of the playing and practice season

These holier than thou, overpaid overseers of D2 institutions have decided that sports should play just a minor part of a students college experience – all the while they are raking in millions in tuition from athletes at their schools while giving out paltry amounts of scholarships.  Their proposals are mainly around reducing time athletes spend on sports in the offseason – “

they would consider changes that reduce athletics time commitments during the nonchampionship segment.

Proposals include –

  • maintain the 45-day period in which to conduct 24 days of practice or competition but preclude any athletically related activities from being conducted during the remaining 21 days – So no weight training except during the 24 days
  • amend the start date of the nonchampionship segment for spring and winter sports, which currently is September 7 or the first day of classes…later date could be adopted to give these student-athletes more time to acclimate to campus life before beginning their sport-related activities. – That’s really helpful to Northern Schools in trying to get in fall workouts and scrimmages now isn’t it.

For more details on these proposals you can read the press release here – NCAA Life In Balance Phase 2 Proposals

Northern Sun D2 College Baseball Poll – 3/16/10

Northern Sun D2 Poll1

The Northern Sun Division 2 College Baseball Poll is back for its 2nd year.  Each week, the Northern Sun Baseball Blog combines the 3 primary Division 2 College Baseball Poll’s into 1 composite ranking of the Top 30 teams.

For the 3rd straight week Florida Southern is the unanimous #1 team in NCAA Division 2 baseball.  The Moccasins swept games against good opponents in Winona State, Ashland and Valdosta State to solidify their record.

For some reason, CBN and NCBWA dropped Southern Arkansas in the rankings despite the Muleriders winning all their games.  With those changes they move from a tie for 2nd in the poll all the way down to 5th place.

Tampa made a big move up the rankings as they go from #20 to #15 and now to #7 this week.  They not only won 7 games during the week, they won them by a large average margin.  USC – Aiken also had a nice move upward and Southeastern Oklahoma makes its first appearance ever on this poll coming in at #26.

The Northern Sun Conference’s Minnesota State comes in at a tie for #29 while Winona State and St. Cloud State both received some votes this week.

Northern Sun D2 College Baseball Poll – 3/10/10

Northern Sun D2 Poll1

The Northern Sun Division 2 College Baseball Poll is back for its 2nd year.  Each week, the Northern Sun Baseball Blog combines the 3 primary Division 2 College Baseball Poll’s into 1 composite ranking of the Top 30 teams.

For the 2nd week in a row Florida Southern was the unanimous #1 team in NCAA Division 2 College Baseball as they swept the top spot in all 3 D2 polls.  As is typical early in the season, we did see some significant movement in the rankings as Francis Marion dropped all the way from #3 to #12, Delta State dropped 7 spots to a tie for #17 and Catawba dropped from #15 all the way out of the Top 30.

On the other hand, we saw big moves upward by Columbus State who moved up from #12 to #6, UNC – Pembroke who broke into the Top 30 to a tie for #17 and Incarnate Word (#25) who last week wasn’t ranked by any of the 3 polls and this week made the Top 30 in all 3 with big wins over previous Top 30 team, Texas – Permian Basin.

One trend that continues this year is that the College Baseball News poll continues to track the most closely to the Northern Sun Poll.  CBN has only 1 of their Top 30 not make the Northern Sun Top 30.  Last year it seemed like PING! was the most divergent and they certainly have some differences this week from the other 2 (Mount Olive, Columbus State, Franklin Pierce) but it seems like the Baseball Writers poll has the most differences with choices like New Mexico Highlands (#10), Francis Marion at #20 and Cal State Bernardino at #12 when they don’t even make the other 2 polls at all.

Northern Sun Conference team, Minnesota State, is now in the Top 30 in 2 of the national polls and is tied for #28 in the Northern Sun D2 Poll.  Winona State also made the Top 30 in 2 polls but didn’t get enough total points to crack the Top 30 in the composite poll.

Northern Sun D2 College Baseball Poll – 3/5/10

Northern Sun D2 Poll1

The Northern Sun Division 2 College Baseball Poll is back for its 2nd year.  Each week, the Northern Sun Baseball Blog combines the 3 primary Division 2 College Baseball Poll’s into 1 composite ranking.

There is a consensus #1 team in NCAA D2 College Baseball and it’s Florida Southern.  The team did lose 13-1 on Tuesday after the poll came out.  The fact that the loss was against the Detroit Tigers major league team probably won’t hurt them in the polls – Moc’s Lose to Tigers

As is common in early season polls, there are lots of diverging opinions about the rest of the Top 30 teams.  Only 20 teams are on all 3 polls but you have lots of different opinions on teams like Cal State – San Bernardino who is ranked 5th by the Baseball Writers, #25 by D2 Head Coaches and out of the Top 30 by Ping.  Mount Olive is another case where NCBWA ranks the 14-0 team #2 overall but they only manage #15 by Ping.  Their games on Wednesday against our #15 team, Catawba, were postponed unfortunately.

With their #22 ranking in the NCBWA poll it allowed Minnesota State from the Northern Sun Conference to achieve a #24 ranking in our poll.  I’m guessing their doubleheader loss to Bemidji State this week will make that short lived.  St. Cloud State (#28) and Wayne State (#30) all were recognized in the NCBWA poll this week.

D2 College Baseball & Northern Sun Updates – Feb 23, 2010

image

We are 3 weeks into the NCAA D2 college baseball season and all but 1 team in the Northern Sun Conference (Mary) have gotten games in.  The Metrodome continues to be used night and day by teams trying to deal with the generally crappy playing conditions all over the Midwest.

Dan Bauer went 9-for-15, a .600 batting average, in the four-game sweep of Northern State in a nonconference series at the H.H.H. Metrodome Sunday (10-2, 17-4) and Monday (4-2, 4-3 (8)). Two of those nine hits were game-winners, both coming in Monday’s doubleheader with the game tied, two outs and in the late innings (bottom 6th in game one and top 8th in game two). He had a team-high in hits and tied a team-high in RBI in the four games with seven. Bauer added three runs, hit his first home run of the season and recorded a double. He stole one base, recorded 11 assists and six putouts playing second base, going all four games without an error. He recorded at least one hit and one RBI in each contest, going a perfect 3-for-3 in the second game of Sunday’s doubleheader, adding three RBI and two runs scored.

Northern Sun Games Last Weekend

Augustana goes 3-1 over the weekend at the Metrodome against Morningside and Nebraska Kearney – Vikings go 3-1

Bemidji State crushes Northern State in first 2 games and then barely holds on to sweep the 4 game series – Beavers Sweep 4

Concordia Split with Nebraska Kearney – Furrow Walk-Off – Bears Split

Minnesota State travels all the way to Colorado for 3 games where they went 2-1 against Colorado Christian – Mav’s Upend Cougars 9-1

In perhaps the best contests, St Cloud State and Winona State split a pair at the Metrodome giving us no clear indication of who’s better.  Huskies Earn Split

Upper Iowa lost 2 to Wayne State scoring only 1 run in each contest.  This helped the WSC fans feel a lot better but causes some concerns for the Peacocks.  Peacocks Drop First 2

Upcoming Northern Sun Action

This weekend will be a great opportunity to see Northern Sun action at the Metrodome in Minneapolis.  On both Friday & Saturday there are a pair of NSIC doubleheaders – Wayne State vs. Winona State and Bemidji State vs. St. Cloud State.   In addition, Minnesota State plays UW-Parkside there on Saturday in a DH to make 14 hours straight of Northern Sun games.

Concordia plays a couple doubleheaders at the Dome this week, Wednesday against St. Johns and Thursday against Kansas Wesleyan.

Augustana and Upper Iowa are both scheduled to travel to play games in Missouri on Saturday.

NCAA Division 2 College Baseball Polls

Both PING! and College Baseball News have updated their polls for the week ending on February 21st.  Each of them agree on the top 3 teams in the country –

  • College Baseball News dropped Emporia State from the top spot all the way down to #10 because of a 8-10 loss to Central Oklahoma.  Southern Arkansas had been tied for first last week but dropped to #2 while sweeping all 3 games they played during the week against West Florida, a team receiving votes in this poll.  Taking over the top spot is Florida Southern (11-0) who plastered Pace University this weekend outscoring them by 68-8 in a 4 game sweep.  The Northern Sun Conference’s Wayne State dropped all the way out of the poll after starting the year ranked #14 in the country and now find themselves out of the top 63.  Minnesota State & Southwest Minnesota State did pick up 1 vote, as they did last week, and St. Cloud State makes a 3rd NSIC team on the list with 1 vote.  College Baseball News D2 Poll
  • PING Baseball also had changeover at the top as they dropped their previous #1 team, UC San Diego, to the #7 spot.  The Tritons (11-3) split their 4 game weekend series against Chico State, who moved into the poll at #19.  Florida Southern, Southern Arkansas and Francis Marion are the top 3 in each of the polls.  There are no Northern Sun teams in the PING poll – Ping Baseball D2 Poll
