NCAA Division 2 Baseball Rankings – 5/11/09

NCAA Baseball Logo

The NCAA D2 College Baseball News, Ping!Baseball have been released for this week:

  • College Baseball News continues to rank Southern Arkansas as their #1 team.  The Muleriders rolled through a very tough Gulf South Conference Tournament undefeated and comes into the NCAA Regional Tournament as the early favorite.  That said, they do play in what is probably the toughest Region in all of D2 college baseball so whatever team comes out of that Region will be a favorite at the D2 College World Series.  Barry reported their scores this week so the yo-yo pattern of the CBN poll continues with them jumping all the way back into the poll at #3.   They will be one of those teams in the South Region where in fact 5 of the Top 14 teams will be playing (#7 West Alabama, #10 Tampa & #14 Florida Southern).  That Region is so stacked that the #15 team, Delta State, didn’t even qualify for the NCAA Regional.  From the Northern Sun Conference, Minnesota State makes their first appearance in the CBN poll at the #25 spot.  They jumped ahead of Wayne State (NE) after beating them twice for the NSIC Title as Wayne State drops from #18 to #26.  College Baseball News Poll
  • Ping!Baseball moves Southern Arkansas to #1 this week after having them at #3 last week.  They take umbrage with their #1 from last week, Delta State, not making the Regional Tourney.  Francis Marion jumped from #14 to #7 and is on a 15 game winning streak coming into the Southeast Regional.  Emporia State is going the other way, dropping from #9 to #16 as the Hornets have lost 6 of their last 10 games.  Minnesota State remains in their poll as the #27 team.  Ping Baseball Poll

The NCAA has released their Division 2 College Baseball Regional poll for May 6, 2009.  The complete poll including all 8 Regions can be found here – NCAA D2 Regional Poll

All Northern Sun teams are members of D2’s Central Region – a region which includes the 13 NSIC teams along with the 8 teams from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.  Each Conference will hold their own year-end Conference Tournament.  The winners of the NSIC and RMAC Tournaments each receive an automatic bid to be 1 of 6 teams in the NCAA Central Region Tourney.  The other 4 spots are at-large bids which this poll helps to determine.

Northern Sun teams hold down the #2,#4 & #5 positions.  Mesa State maintains the #1 spot even after a tough couple weeks and is line to host the NCAA Central Region Tournament.

Some of the other interesting Regions to look at include the South Region (which as usual is loaded).  Delta State is ranked as the #1 team in Division 2 college baseball by Ping! but they are seeded #10 in the South Region which means they may have to win the Gulf South Conference to make the South Regional.  Right now they’ve already lost 1 game in the double elimination GSC Tourney and face a tough West Alabama team today in an elimination game.

You can track all of the different Conference’s and who is winning automatic bids with this posting from yesterday – D2 Conference Playoffs

Northern Sun D2 College Baseball Poll – 5/5/09

Northern Sun D2 Poll1

Each week, the Northern Sun Baseball Blog combines the 3 primary Division 2 College Baseball Poll’s into 1 composite ranking.

There’s a new #1 team in the Northern Sun D2 college baseball poll and it’s Southern Arkansas who reappears after a 1 week absence.  Last week’s #1 team, Barry, falls to #12 but that’s more a function of the College Baseball Poll’s goofy rules about dropping teams from their poll if they don’t report their results to CBN.  Otherwise, it’s likely that they would be 2nd or 3rd.  Instead, West Chester moves up to the #2 spot for their highest ranking all year.

Delta State continues to climb the polls and Tampa (the D2 National Champion in 2006 & 2007) is making a late surge.  On the flip side, Mesa State has really dropped down the polls as they were ranked as high as #3 just 3 weeks ago.

Wayne State (NE) of the Northern Sun Conference continues to move up the rankings and has moved from #20 to #18.  They have made it into the Top 30 of all 3 polls for the first time and are in the Top 10 in the NCBWA ranking.  Minnesota State received votes but not enough to crack the Top 30.

NCAA Division 2 Baseball Rankings – 5/4/09

The College Baseball News, Ping!Baseball and NCBWA Regional rankings have been released for this week:

  • College Baseball News has a new #1 team – it’s Southern Arkansas reclaiming the #1 spot after being tied for #2 last week.  That said, the rankings this week are flawed (and have been all along).  Why are they flawed you ask?  Because last week’s #1 team, Barry, wasn’t included in the rankings at all.  Why weren’t they included you ask?  Because they didn’t report to College Baseball News.  So basically, if you fail to report to CBN you are not eligible to be ranked at all which means that a team like Barry goes from #1 to Not Ranked.  It’s been this way all along but it hasn’t happened this year with a #1 team.  Barry probably would have dropped from #1 after losing 2 of 3 this past week but whether they report their results shouldn’t drop them out.  The Northern Sun Conference’s Wayne State (NE) moves up to a tie for #18 from #24 last week.  College Baseball News Ranking
  • Ping!Baseball has been derided by some who question their rankings but they don’t suffer from the same issues regarding reporting that are inherent in the CBN poll.  This week they elevate Delta State to the #1 spot and drop Barry to #2.  There wasn’t a lot of movement in their poll this week but for the first time we do see 2 Northern Sun teams in their Top 30.  Minnesota State stays at #27 and Wayne State (NE) makes their first appearance in a tie for the 30th spot. Ping!Baseball Ranking
  • A major change took place in the National College Baseball Writers Association Regional Poll as Wayne State (NE) takes over the #1 position in the Central Region, overtaking Mesa State who has been losing regularly all of a sudden.  If this ranking carries over the the official NCAA Regional rankings it could have an impact on where the NCAA D2 Central Region Tournament takes place.  It’s interesting too that Mesa State received more 1st place votes but fewer overall points which means some voters didn’t have them in their top 2.

Northern Sun D2 College Baseball Poll – 4/28/09

Northern Sun D2 Poll1

Each week, the Northern Sun Baseball Blog combines the 3 primary Division 2 College Baseball Poll’s into 1 composite ranking.

There’s a new unanimous #1 team in D2 college baseball – it’s Barry (Miami Shores, FL).  The Buccaneers beat Rollins and then took 2 of 3 from Tampa.  They are led by a potent offensive attack as they are hitting .349 as a team.  Their first baseman, Yudelmis Hernandez, has broken the school record with 20 home runs and catcher, Yan Gomez, has 18 homers while breaking the school records for RBI’s and Total Bases in a season.  With all of the home runs they’ve broken the NCAA D2 team record for Grand Slams in a season with 10.

Barry took over from Southern Arkansas who had held the top spot the past 2 weeks.  The Muleriders lost 2 of 3 to Delta State over the weekend which helped Delta move up 7 spots in the rankings.

South Carolina – Aiken made a big move up this week going from #14 to #6.  Catawba College made an impressive debut in the poll as they were ranked in all 3 polls for the first time to move from unranked to a solid #19.

Emporia State took a tumble from #2 to #7 and Mesa State was another previous top 5 team to move the wrong way as they lost 4 games last week to drop from #4 to a tie for #9.

The Northern Sun Conference’s Wayne State (NE) moved up another spot to get to #20.  Minnesota State also received votes in 2 of the 3 polls but finished just outside of the top 30 in 33rd place.

NCBWA Poll

NCAA Division 2 Baseball Rankings – 4/27/09

NCAA Baseball Logo

The College Baseball News, Ping!Baseball and NCBWA Regional rankings have been released for this week:

  • The College Baseball News poll has a new #1 team in the nation as Barry takes over their #1 spot.  Previous #1, Southern Arkansas, drops into a tie for 2nd with Ashland.  Last week’s #2 team, Mesa State, took a big tumble after losing a series to Metro State and then splitting with New Mexico Highlands.  Delta State made a huge jump up in the their poll moving from no votes all the way to #15 after taking 2 of 3 from Southern Arkansas.  Representing the Northern Sun Conference, Wayne State moved up one spot to #24.  This despite 2 NSIC schools not completing their ballots for the week.   College Baseball News Ranking

  • The Ping!Baseball poll also saw the same change at the top as Barry takes over their #1 spot.  They did this with a win over Rollins and taking 2 of 3 from a very tough Tampa team.  Southern Arkansas fell to the #3 spot after holding down the top spot in the Ping poll for 10 straight weeks.  For as much grief as some people give the Ping poll (for example, placing St. Cloud State in the Top 30 ahead of Wayne State) they really got it right with Delta State.  Last week the CBN poll didn’t rank Delta at all and Ping had them at #5.  After beating Southern Arkansas, Ping seems to be closer to the right spot for the Statesmen.  That said, they finally took St. Cloud State out of the poll and instead of replacing them with Wayne State they put the Northern Sun’s 2nd place team, Minnesota State, in the the #27 spot.  While the Mavericks are a deserving team and just split 4 games with Wayne State I’d still put Wayne ahead of them.  Ping!Baseball Ranking

  • The National College Baseball Writers published their Regional Poll.  The NCAA Regional poll is much more meaningful but it’s still interesting to see what the writers think.  Mesa State maintains the number 1 spot but for the first time it’s not unanimous as Wayne State took a 1st place vote.  Colorado State – Pueblo dropped 2 spots after getting swept in 4 games by Nebraska – Kearney over the weekend.  Winona State moved ahead of Concordia which seems overdue since they are 3 spots ahead of them in the NSIC standings.

The NCAA has released their Division 2 College Baseball Regional poll for April 22, 2009.

For anyone that remembers last week’s poll – there have been NO changes in the top 8 Central Region teams.

Mesa State and Wayne State (NE) continue to have a very strong hold on the top 2 spots.  It continues to be troubling that RMAC teams hold down spots 3 & 4 as this means that the Northern Sun would, at best, get 3 teams in the NCAA D2 Regional Tournament.  With the RMAC’s Metro State winning 2 of 3 against Mesa State this past weekend a nightmare scenario of Metro winning the RMAC Tourney would get them 4 spots in the NCAA Regional leaving only 2 spots for NSIC teams.

Best case for the Northern Sun teams is to have Mesa State sweep New Mexico Highlands this weekend and knock them down in the standings.  Highlands final 4 games are against Metro State who can certainly win some of those games too.  Colorado State – Pueblo has a much easier schedule so it’s unlikely that they will move downward much.

Every game is certainly critical in jockeying for an at-large NCAA bid.

Northern Sun D2 College Baseball Poll – 4/21/09

Northern Sun D2 Poll1

Each week, the Northern Sun Baseball Blog combines the 3 primary Division 2 College Baseball Poll’s into 1 composite ranking.

Southern Arkansas remains as the #1 team in this week’s Northern Sun D2 College Baseball poll as they swept the top spot in all 3 polls.  There was major upheaval in this week’s poll as a number of highly ranked teams had poor weeks on the field.  In addition, we had been seeing the polls coming closer together a few weeks ago but they seem to be diverging in opinions over the last couple weeks.

Emporia State moves up from #5 to #2 this week.  They were ranked #3 in all 3 polls but because the Ping poll moved Mesa State down so far it allowed Emporia to grab the 2nd spot.  Barry moves up to #3 with Mesa State and West Chester rounding out the top 5.

Florida Southern took a huge tumble, falling all the way from #2 to #12.  Grand Valley State took a similar dive going from #4 to #15.

On the divergent opinion side you have teams like SC – Aiken getting top 10 rankings in 2 polls but being left out of the Ping poll.  You have Delta State at #5, #20 and not rated and you have Central Missouri at #7, #29 and not rated.  Among the top 30 teams only 18 of them made it onto all 3 Top 30 rankings.

The Northern Sun Conference is represented as Wayne State (NE) moved all the way up to #12 on the NCBWA poll and is sitting at #21 in the composite poll after not making the Top 30 last week.  Minnesota State and St. Cloud State received votes but not enough to make the Top 30.

NCAA Division 2 Baseball Rankings – 4/20/09

The College Baseball News, Ping!Baseball and NCBWA Regional rankings have been released for this week:

  • The College Baseball News poll continued with the same top 3 teams from last week – Southern Arkansas, Mesa State & Emporia State.  After that there was quite the shakeup – one of those was #4 Florida Southern who dropped to #13 after getting swept by Lynn this past weekend.  They have a chance to right the ship (or go down further) with tough upcoming series’ against Tampa and Nova.  Another team taking a big hit in the polls was last week’s #5 team, Grand Valley State, who dropped to #21.  The Lakers were 2-5 on the week which doubled their loss total for the year.  Ashland, a team that swept Grand Valley, benefited by jumping up from #13 to #5.  All in all there were 6 teams that dropped at least 6 spots in the poll this week.  The Northern Sun’s Wayne State (NE) dropped 2 spots from #23 to #25 despite going 4-0 for the week.  College Baseball News Ranking
  • The Ping! poll saw similar upheaval in their rankings which is a little different as theirs doesn’t seem to fluctuate as much.  Souther Arkansas is still their #1 team but Barry jumped up from #4 to #2 to take over the second position.  Emporia jumped from #7 to #3 and Tampa moved up to #4.  Unlike the CBN poll, Ping dropped Mesa State from #5 to #8 based on an 0-1 week.  The Northern Sun’s St. Cloud State maintained their spot at #30 in the Ping poll.  The fact that the Huskies are on the poll and Wayne State (NE) is not tends to detract from the credibility of the poll.  Ping!Baseball Ranking
  • The National College Baseball Writers published their Regional Poll.  The NCAA Regional poll is much more meaningful but it’s still interesting to see what the writers think.  Mesa State maintains a unanimous #1 and Wayne State maintained a unanimous #2.  There weren’t any changes in the rankings until you got down toward the bottom –

NCAA D2 Regional College Baseball Poll

NCAA Baseball Logo

The official NCAA Division 2 college baseball poll was released 2 days ago for the first time.  This is a primary indicator for teams as to where they stand when it comes to whether they will receive an at-large bid to their respective NCAA Regional Tourney.

The other 4 spots are at-large bids which this poll helps to determine.

image

Unfortunately for the Northern Sun Conference, 3 of the top 4 spots are currently owned by RMAC teams.  If the season ended today, the Northern Sun would only receive 2 or 3 of the 6 spots even though they have 13 teams compared to 8 in the RMAC.  They could receive only 2 spots if a team like Regis unexpectedly were to win the RMAC Tourney and get their automatic bid which would leave Mesa, Pueblo and Highlands to get at-large bids.

Each of the RMAC teams only has 3 weekend series remaining (12 games).  The best bet for Northern Sun teams would be for New Mexico Highlands to lose a bunch of those – they do have a 4 game series against Mesa State coming up.

The complete Regional poll can be found here – NCAA D2 Regional College Baseball Poll

NCAA Division 2 Baseball Rankings – 4/13/09

NCAA Baseball Logo

The College Baseball News and Ping!Baseball D2 college baseball rankings have been released for the week.

  • The College Baseball News Division 2 college baseball poll saw a big shakeup at the top of the rankings as last week’s #1 team (Florida Southern) and #2 team (Grand Valley State) both dropped 3 spots to #4 & #5 respectively.  That allowed Southern Arkansas to jump to their #1 spot.  Mesa State also moved up a spot to #2 and Emporia State moves up to #3 from #5.  Overall, there wasn’t as much movement as we’ve seen in some weeks as only 1 team that was in last week’s top 20 fell out of the top 20 this week (Cameron from #12 to #21) as USC Aiken jumped from #24 to #14.  The Northern Sun’s Wayne State (NE) continues to make incremental progress up the poll as they moved from #27 to #23 this week.  College Baseball News Ranking
  • Ping!Baseball didn’t have as big a shakeup at the top since they have had Southern Arkansas as their #1 team for 7 straight weeks.  Florida Southern and Grand Valley State stayed at #2 & #3 in their Top 30.  In fact, they made no changes at all to their top 10 from last week.  Erskine took the biggest fall moving from #11 to #21 with a lousy week.  Ping continues to rank the Northern Sun’s St. Cloud State in their poll although they dropped from #26 to #30.  Why they have the Huskies in the poll ahead of teams like Wayne State and Minnesota State is a mystery to me.  Ping!Baseball Ranking

NCBWA Central Region D2 Baseball Poll – 4/13/09

image

The National College Baseball Writers Association has released their Regional Poll for the week ending April 12th.  At the end of the regular season these are the teams that will be competing for 6 spots in the NCAA Regional Tournament.  Both the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament Champion and the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament Champion will earn automatic bids with the remaining 4 spots nominated as at-large bids.

I talked about the RMAC in a posting yesterday (RMAC Update).

It would be really great if the Northern Sun Conference could end up with 4 of the 6 spots but the 3 top teams in the RMAC are on hot streaks right now.  That 3rd team in the RMAC (New Mexico Highlands) has won 10 straight and jumped up 2 spots to take over the #5 position in this poll.  SMSU fell 3 spots this week as any team that loses a game to Minnesota Crookston is going to be penalized.  With Wayne State and Minnesota State looking the best in the Northern Sun so far, it may come down to a dog fight for the last at-large bid (assuming the Conference Tourney’s don’t have upsets which allow automatic bids to go to lower ranked teams).

Keep in mind that the official NCAA Regional polls are more important to gauge which teams will get at-large bids.  It’s likely that those NCAA polls will be released this week or next for the first time.  As always, Northern Sun Baseball will post it as soon as they are published.
