NSIC Office Finds NO Worthy Players and Other News

Blind Ump

Last year, during the preseason, I called out the Northern Sun Conference for their choice for Pitcher of the Week.  Last Years Rant

I guess they were concerned I’d do that again so this week they made the decision to not name a Player or Pitcher of the Week under the excuse that not enough games were played.  NSIC Week 2 Release

So was anyone worthy this week?  How about –

  • Wayne State’s Nick Bidroski goes 4-4 in his doubleheader with 2 runs scored, 3 RBI’s.  His 4 hits included a homer and 2 doubles.
  • Augustana’s Nate Baumann goes 5-8 with 3 runs and 2 RBI’s
  • Augustana’s Charlie Dubanoski goes 4-5 with 2 runs scored and 5 RBI’s to go with a stolen base and throwing out a base stealer

Those seem like pretty good efforts to me and worthy of recognition!

That said, the only pitcher worth mentioning was Austen Wisroth of Wayne State who pitched 1 2/3 innings of shutout ball with 3 strikeouts.

Other News

Wayne State – 2010 Preview

Wayne State1

Today I conclude my 2010 season previews with a preview of Wayne State.  I look back at their results in 2009, key roster transitions and make a prediction about where I expect the 2010 team will finish.

Wayne State – 2009 Results

The Wildcats concluded 2009 the same way they’ve been concluding seasons for some time now – with the Northern Sun Conference regular season title and a trip to the NCAA Regional Tournament.  In fact, this was the 6th straight conference title and NCAA appearance.  Along the way, the team set records for most wins by a NSIC team in league play going 27-4 and tying a team record for most wins in a season with an overall record of 45-14.  After winning the regular season crown the team finished 2nd in the NSIC Postseason Tournament (NSIC Tourney Results) and then went on to finish 2nd in the NCAA Regional to just miss out on a chance to advance to the D2 College World Series Mesa State Upends Wayne St.

Northern Sun Preseason Coaches Poll Released

Yesterday, the Northern Sun Conference released their preseason coaches poll and a surprise team sits atop the projected standings Northern Sun Press Release

St. Paul, MN. – The defending NSIC Tournament Champions of Minnesota State University, Mankato were the top pick in the 2010 NSIC Preseason Baseball Coaches Poll. This marks the first time since 2003 that Wayne State has not been selected by the NSIC Baseball Coaches as the preseason favorite. Minnesota State amassed 151 points after receiving seven first place votes (coaches can’t vote for their own team) to edge Wayne State’s 148 points and five first place votes.
SMSU, the last NSIC team besides Wayne State to earn the coaches nod, had 120 points while Winona State had 118 and St. Cloud State had 114 points and a first place vote.

In addition to the poll, coaches named their Preseason Player of the Year and Pitcher of the Year –

Wendte was named to the 2009 Rawlings/ABCA All-American 1st Team as well as being named the 2009 NSIC Player of the Year. He hit .396 last season with 14 homers and a team-high 67 RBI’s to help the Wildcats win a sixth straight Northern Sun Conference regular season title. He set a new school record with 83 runs scored, which ranked fifth in NCAA Division II, and had a team-high 51 walks to rank eighth in NCAA Division II. Wendte was a three-time NSIC Player of the Week last season and he led the Wildcats in hits (78), doubles (20), stolen bases (19), slugging percentage (.741) and on-base percentage (.527). Wendte also received First Team Daktronics Inc. All-Central Region honors last season.

Schrader finished 5-1 last season with a 3.88 earned run average in 11 appearances, including 10 starts. He was named the team’s most valuable pitcher and a second team all-region honoree in 2009 as he led the Mustangs in innings pitched (60.1), complete games (3) and strikeouts (67). He begins the 2010 season ranking fourth in school history in strikeouts (182), seventh in games started (36) and ninth in innings pitched (188.2). Against Winona State last season, Schrader recorded a school record 15 strikeouts as he broke the previous record of 14 set by Dean Champine in 1973.

While there should be no question about naming Wendte, the naming of Schrader is a little more surprising.  Schrader didn’t get named to either the Conference’s 1st or 2nd team All-Conference teams last spring and there are plenty of players who were that are returning and had better stats.

Final 2009 Northern Sun D2 College Baseball Poll

Northern Sun D2 Poll1

Each week during the 2009 NCAA Division 2 college baseball season the Northern Sun Baseball blog combined the 3 primary D2 baseball polls into 1 composite ranking.  This week 2 of the 3 ranking services put out their year end polls so it seems appropriate to combine those into 1 final composite poll for the year.

Lynn University is the unanimous choice as the #1 team in Division II baseball with their run to the 2009 NCAA D2 Championship.  Emporia State, the 2nd place team, was #2 in both polls.

In fact, as might be expected, the 2 polls are the most similar they’ve been all year.  All 8 teams that made it to the D2 College World Series cracked the Top 10.  The 2 teams in the Top 10 that didn’t make it there were both teams that eventual champion Lynn had to beat in the South Regional to reach the World Series.

For the Northern Sun Conference, Wayne State (NE) cracked the Top 30 in the #30 position.

The NCAA D2 College Baseball News, Ping!Baseball have been released for this week:

  • College Baseball News continues to rank Southern Arkansas as their #1 team.  The Muleriders rolled through a very tough Gulf South Conference Tournament undefeated and comes into the NCAA Regional Tournament as the early favorite.  That said, they do play in what is probably the toughest Region in all of D2 college baseball so whatever team comes out of that Region will be a favorite at the D2 College World Series.  Barry reported their scores this week so the yo-yo pattern of the CBN poll continues with them jumping all the way back into the poll at #3.   They will be one of those teams in the South Region where in fact 5 of the Top 14 teams will be playing (#7 West Alabama, #10 Tampa & #14 Florida Southern).  That Region is so stacked that the #15 team, Delta State, didn’t even qualify for the NCAA Regional.  From the Northern Sun Conference, Minnesota State makes their first appearance in the CBN poll at the #25 spot.  They jumped ahead of Wayne State (NE) after beating them twice for the NSIC Title as Wayne State drops from #18 to #26.  College Baseball News Poll
  • Ping!Baseball moves Southern Arkansas to #1 this week after having them at #3 last week.  They take umbrage with their #1 from last week, Delta State, not making the Regional Tourney.  Francis Marion jumped from #14 to #7 and is on a 15 game winning streak coming into the Southeast Regional.  Emporia State is going the other way, dropping from #9 to #16 as the Hornets have lost 6 of their last 10 games.  Minnesota State remains in their poll as the #27 team.  Ping Baseball Poll

NCAA D2 College Baseball Regional Poll – 5/6/09

NCAA Baseball Logo

The NCAA has released their Division 2 College Baseball Regional poll for May 6, 2009.  The complete poll including all 8 Regions can be found here – NCAA D2 Regional Poll

All Northern Sun teams are members of D2’s Central Region – a region which includes the 13 NSIC teams along with the 8 teams from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.  Each Conference will hold their own year-end Conference Tournament.  The winners of the NSIC and RMAC Tournaments each receive an automatic bid to be 1 of 6 teams in the NCAA Central Region Tourney.  The other 4 spots are at-large bids which this poll helps to determine.

Northern Sun teams hold down the #2,#4 & #5 positions.  Mesa State maintains the #1 spot even after a tough couple weeks and is line to host the NCAA Central Region Tournament.

Some of the other interesting Regions to look at include the South Region (which as usual is loaded).  Delta State is ranked as the #1 team in Division 2 college baseball by Ping! but they are seeded #10 in the South Region which means they may have to win the Gulf South Conference to make the South Regional.  Right now they’ve already lost 1 game in the double elimination GSC Tourney and face a tough West Alabama team today in an elimination game.

You can track all of the different Conference’s and who is winning automatic bids with this posting from yesterday – D2 Conference Playoffs
