2010 D2 College World Series – Day 3 Recap

NCAA Baseball Logo

Three days are complete in the 2010 NCAA Division 2 College World Series and so far the #1 ranked team, UC – San Diego, is living up to its ranking.  The Tritons have won 2 straight games, first beating #4 ranked Georgia College 3-2 on Saturday and yesterday beating #3 ranked Central Missouri 2-1 in 11 innings.  With that win they advance to the Bracket 1 Championship game and need to win just 1 of their next 2 games to make the overall Title Game.

Tomorrow, Georgia College will play Central Missouri for the right to play on again against San Diego.  2nd ranked Tampa was the first team eliminated from the College World Series.

In Bracket 2, Sunday’s winners, Kutztown and Southern Indiana play while Franklin Pierce faces off against Minnesota State in an elimination game.

All-American Teams

The Division 2 All-American Teams have been announced –

  • The Rawlings/ABCA All-American Team includes 2 Augustana players, Deryk Marks and Nate Baumann, on the 2nd team along with Wayne State’s Nick Bidroski, St. Cloud State’s Jordan Smith (the only Freshman) and Minnesota State’s Blake Schwartz on the 3rd team.
  • The Rawlings/ABCA Gold Glove Team featured no players from the Northern Sun Conference
  • The Daktronics All-American Team featured Marks & Baumann again on the 2nd team with St. Cloud State’s Jordan Smith & David Deminsky and Minnesota Duluth’s Tyler Erickson being named Honorable Mention.

Minnesota State Update

The Mavericks were forced by the weather to play a weird, late game on Sunday which they lost 8-6.  The game didn’t start until 11:02pm because of rain delays and didn’t finish until 2:28am on Monday morning.  The game wasn’t really as close as the score seemed to indicate as the team scored 5 late runs in the 9th inning.

One interesting note, Minnesota State’s coaches don’t seem to agree with the award givers.  Blake Schwartz won every Central Region & Conference award as the Pitcher of the Year.  He was even named 3rd team All-American (see above).  That said, for the 3rd straight weekend he’s been designated the #3 starter as the Mavericks went with Bret Mitchell in game #1 and Patrick Lenton in today’s game.  If they lose today he won’t have even pitched in the College World Series.

No disrespect for anyone that was choosen All-American, but if Jordan Smith is 3rd team wow the other outfielders on 1st and 2nd must be really special.

As a fyi not Jordan’s parent either!

He was the only Freshman named – that’s pretty impressive.

While he was a standout in the NSIC, there are a lot of other very good (better even) teams so it wouldn’t surprise me that others might be better. Hardly anyone other than maybe pro scouts actually see lots of different teams so it’s hard to say.

Agreed fishingmn his time will come, but if you had a chance to see him in regional against top teams he made them pay dearly for any mistakes made he is going to be a good one!

I don’t want to take anything away from Jordan Smith but it just so happens that that kid from Augustana (Mr Baumann) is pretty special too. As a matter of fact there is a whole country out there with some pretty special ball players. Yes the fact that he made 3rd team as a freshman is pretty impressive but he’s not the only young man out there with the potential to play at the next level.

At first glance reading your post I was gonna remark that I can’t wait for fall ball either then it dawned on me. There is no fall ball for Jr. this year. That’s gonna take some getting use to. I think it’s starting to sink in to my son also. While driving in the car today after a long period of silence he remarked to me that he’s really gonna miss it. Tell me about it. Last year (His Jr. year) I made 31 out of 60 games covering 8 states. This year, with no spring trip or a regional tournament, I still managed 23 games. Considering I live halfway across the country that’s gotta be a record or something. Things are diffently be different so my advice to all, “Enjoy every minute of it that you can.” You think you like it a lot now but after it’s gone you’ll realize how much fun it really was.

We found many options on E-Bay for cheap. However this requires authentication that is more
troublesome that using a RFID chip. It is blend of reliability, affordability, multi featured, fabulous looks, vibrating colors
    and energetic functionality.
