3 For 1

SW MN State Minnesota Duluth Minnesota State

There are 3 teams left battling for the top spot in the Northern Sun Tournament.  Southwest Minnesota State will play Minnesota Duluth at 11am today with the winner facing off against top seeded Minnesota State for the Tourney Title and an NCAA automatic bid.

We got to this point as Minnesota State won a pair of games yesterday, eliminating Winona State 20-4 and giving Duluth their first loss by a score of 7-6 in 11 innings.  Meanwhile, Southwest Minnesota State knocked St. Cloud State out of the tournament with a 5-3 win.

In a strange twist, the St. Cloud State Huskies will now be best served by rooting for the Mavericks to win the Tourney giving them the clearest path to an at-large bid to the NCAA Tourney.

    Let’s hope 4 get in!

With SCSU being 37-15 and UN-Kearney 37-18 and the Huskies a head of them #5 to #6 last week and also a much better regional record I would hope to think even if UMD or SWMU win that the #6 UNK would get bumped.

Mesa went 2-2 in the last week of the season last year and stayed at #1. And then went 0-2 in the tourney AND STILL STAYED AT #1. Hopefully this precedent shows they look at the complete body of work from Feb 1st.

Still can’t figure out how SCSU went from #2 to #5 last week playing tough competition and going 3-4 and Mesa going 4-3 AND AGAIN STAYING AT #4?

    GO NSIC!

The danger I see is whether there might be some bias to try to “even it up” and have 3 teams from each conference. I don’t know enough about the ranking to know how much is subjective which might allow the ranking committee to play with the numbers vs. purely statistical.
