Rain Rain Go Away & Northern State Controversy?

12 games were scheduled that involved Northern Sun teams yesterday.  10 of them were cancelled due to the weather and Northern State wishes the other 2 were as well.  This goes along with the 5 that were cancelled on Thursday. 3 on Wednesday and 3 on Tuesday.  Most of the games lost were in Florida where teams scraped together money to get away from the bad weather.  The Florida forecast is supposed to be much improved today.

Northern State Controversy

Northern State may have hit a new low yesterday after getting swept in a doubleheader by NAIA’s Minot State by a combined score of 29-0.  Minot State had a record of 10-19 last year so they are a weaker team in a lower division of baseball.  The team was outhit 32-6, committed 6 errors and their pitchers hit 6 batters over the 2 games.

So what’s the controversy?

So I’m reading the press release and looking at the box scores – Minot State Grabs 2 From Wolves  Do you notice anything from the Minot State box scores?

The players listed who kicked Northern State’s butts all play for Minnesota State, not Minot State.   Northern State is playing in Arizona while Minnesota State is supposed to be playing in Florida.  So what happened?

  • Minnesota State’s games were cancelled the last 2 days – did they get on a plane and go to Arizona where they pretended to be Minot State Beavers?
  • Did the Northern State Sports Information Director have a massive screw up?
  • Did the games even really take place?

Minot State’s entire school website is down so I can’t even check what they have to say about it – maybe that’s part of the evil plan?

I may have to ping the Minnesota State SID for a comment.

So after sitting in the Florida rain for the last two days while 3 games were cancelled I wake up to a beautiful sunny day, 70 degrees and another game cancelled. Supposedly the fields are under water after the rain of the last couple days. Hard to believe there aren’t any contingency plans.

A disappointing trip getting almost half the scheduled games cancelled. Long way to come for 5 games, 2 of which were against a conference opponent. I think the best games we had were against Winona State. That is a good team and are going to do some damage this year. That says a lot about the level of play in the Northern Sun Conference. Hopefully we’ll get some decent weather so that these teams can show their stuff.

I can vouch for the Minnesota State team being in Florida yesterday. I saw most of the players listed on those box scores walking around in the rain.

(full disclosure: my son plays for Minnesota State)

Augustana split today with #5 ranked Grand Valley State winning 11-2 and losing 15-5.

Not that it matters but the scores were 11-2 and 13-4.

That’s odd that Augustana got to play Grand Valley State when Minnesota State was supposed to play them at 1:00 and the game was cancelled early in the morning. I’m not sure about this RussMatt setup.

The RussMatt games were cancelled and a coach found a field that he had connections with and scheduled a game that had nothing to do with RussMatt.

Sounds like Augustana’s coach is a hard working guy!

Very hardworking and a man that is all about baseball.

Sorry to hear bout all the rain down there. Wasn’t much better bach home. WSC’s games Wed. and Thur canceled cause of rain also. Tried getting some field time in The Dome but couldn’t get field time. This season not making it easy of the boys is it?

Whats with the player of the week love affair with MN state? 3 out of 8?! How about spreading the love a little? Mostly tongue in cheek here? 2-2 with a 5.5 ERA?

By the way, after contacting Paul Allen, SID at Minnesota State, he believes that the issue with the wrong names had to do with the software. He thinks that Minot State and Minnesota State both use the initials MSU so it imported Minnesota State’s data incorrectly. No conspiracy after all.
