Northern Sun D2 College Baseball Poll – 3/10/10

Northern Sun D2 Poll1

The Northern Sun Division 2 College Baseball Poll is back for its 2nd year.  Each week, the Northern Sun Baseball Blog combines the 3 primary Division 2 College Baseball Poll’s into 1 composite ranking of the Top 30 teams.

For the 2nd week in a row Florida Southern was the unanimous #1 team in NCAA Division 2 College Baseball as they swept the top spot in all 3 D2 polls.  As is typical early in the season, we did see some significant movement in the rankings as Francis Marion dropped all the way from #3 to #12, Delta State dropped 7 spots to a tie for #17 and Catawba dropped from #15 all the way out of the Top 30.

On the other hand, we saw big moves upward by Columbus State who moved up from #12 to #6, UNC – Pembroke who broke into the Top 30 to a tie for #17 and Incarnate Word (#25) who last week wasn’t ranked by any of the 3 polls and this week made the Top 30 in all 3 with big wins over previous Top 30 team, Texas – Permian Basin.

One trend that continues this year is that the College Baseball News poll continues to track the most closely to the Northern Sun Poll.  CBN has only 1 of their Top 30 not make the Northern Sun Top 30.  Last year it seemed like PING! was the most divergent and they certainly have some differences this week from the other 2 (Mount Olive, Columbus State, Franklin Pierce) but it seems like the Baseball Writers poll has the most differences with choices like New Mexico Highlands (#10), Francis Marion at #20 and Cal State Bernardino at #12 when they don’t even make the other 2 polls at all.

Northern Sun Conference team, Minnesota State, is now in the Top 30 in 2 of the national polls and is tied for #28 in the Northern Sun D2 Poll.  Winona State also made the Top 30 in 2 polls but didn’t get enough total points to crack the Top 30 in the composite poll.

Hope Minnesota State enjoyed their time in the polls. 3-4 in the last week – and they will fall out of sight. Welcome to our world boys.

Actually – the polls are for games played Monday thru Sunday each week so the Bemidji series was already factored in.

They are 2-2 this week with a split against a ranked Winona State team, a win against #23 Ashland and a loss to a mediocre Loch Haven.

If they finish the week in Florida with 2 more wins they should be fine.

CU defeated UNO 5 to 1. Another ranked team went down in defeat.

St. Cloud should move up in the polls with their impressive wins today. 18-1 and 11-0 over Mayville State. The stats should really look good after today.

Beating a D3 team from North Dakota who was 16-23 last year counts for nothing in the polls no matter what the score.

I know, just wondering after last year why Dolan wants to run up the win record and stats by playing this type of opponent.
To be the best you have to play and beat the best. That means playing the toughest teams you can find.

Not to make a stink, but just a point, but the Metrodome games are schuduled by the Metrodome. And who else can they play with no other DII’s around this week.

And so the Gophers playing Hamline, Concrodia Moorehead and St. Thomas, are they playing a soft scheudule?

And just to make a point they did just get back from playing Ouachita Baptist, who won 39 games last year and took 3rd in the ’08 World Series, Arkansas Tech, who is 15-5 and Southern Arkansas, who is ranked #2 and 18-3. They also split with Winona and lost games to rain with Central Missouri. They also swept Parkside, who beat Wayne 2x and BSU who swept Mankato the 2nd day.

Good luck to all with the NSIC coming soon!

St Cloud’s schedule is much improved over last year.

In the end, the most important thing is how well the non-conference games prepare your team for Conference play. I think St. Cloud will be in very good shape. One of the biggest factors is their smart decision to play so many games in the Metrodome. Every other team is having games cancelled which leaves them less prepared. The Conference games start in 6 days and only 1 team (Bemidji) has played more games so far to get themselves ready.

CU and SMSU rained out on Saturday. Golden Bears open next weekend with Augie. Augie took 3 out 4 from CU last year.
