Northern Sun D2 College Baseball Poll – 3/5/10

Northern Sun D2 Poll1

The Northern Sun Division 2 College Baseball Poll is back for its 2nd year.  Each week, the Northern Sun Baseball Blog combines the 3 primary Division 2 College Baseball Poll’s into 1 composite ranking.

There is a consensus #1 team in NCAA D2 College Baseball and it’s Florida Southern.  The team did lose 13-1 on Tuesday after the poll came out.  The fact that the loss was against the Detroit Tigers major league team probably won’t hurt them in the polls – Moc’s Lose to Tigers

As is common in early season polls, there are lots of diverging opinions about the rest of the Top 30 teams.  Only 20 teams are on all 3 polls but you have lots of different opinions on teams like Cal State – San Bernardino who is ranked 5th by the Baseball Writers, #25 by D2 Head Coaches and out of the Top 30 by Ping.  Mount Olive is another case where NCBWA ranks the 14-0 team #2 overall but they only manage #15 by Ping.  Their games on Wednesday against our #15 team, Catawba, were postponed unfortunately.

With their #22 ranking in the NCBWA poll it allowed Minnesota State from the Northern Sun Conference to achieve a #24 ranking in our poll.  I’m guessing their doubleheader loss to Bemidji State this week will make that short lived.  St. Cloud State (#28) and Wayne State (#30) all were recognized in the NCBWA poll this week.

That’s not a good sign for Wayne State. They are actually 4-6 on the season now. They go from losing 3 of 4 to Winona, to beating a ranked Emporia State team to losing to Parkside. Parkside was 2-7 before today and lost 3 games badly to St. Cloud State to open the season. Parkside also lost 2 games by 6 runs a piece to Minnesota State. What’s that say for Wayne in comparing to the top teams in the Conference?

Yes – it was just 1 game but I’m beginning to think the Conference season may be more competitive than I predicted early on for the top spot.

Winona just beat Lynn University 10-4 I think. Winona had 5 homeruns. Lynn is not the team they have been in the past.

Great Day for young Mr. Smith Winona is on a roll.

Furrow hit a home run today. DuBay and Lippincott each had three hits.

All three from the same high school.

Winona is on a roll. CU plays SW Minnesota two tomorrow

Great job out of Winona. Good to see some good things happening for the NSIC.

Wayne will get it together in the next week, I’ll bet

They hit it hard today – right at ’em. Hope for Jackson to be eligible on Monday and to play against Upper Iowa next week.

WSCDad’s right. I was there and the ball was hit hard at people more than a few times. Wisc Park’s a good team also. Beat USI friday. WSC still mixing matching + experminting. Looking at the big picture and not short range success. Like cu17dad says, “They’ll be just fine.”

Concordia beats SMSU 5-2 in Florida. St. Cloud gets hammered something like 15-4 against #4 Southern Arkansas.

Game 2 CU won over SMSU 5 to 1

SCSU was down 7-4 today in the 7th with runners at 1st and 2nd with a very questionable balk called against then. And then gave up 7 runs in the 9th. They had a 6-1 lead yesterday in the 7th. They need Tim Scott and Ryne Schwenke back bad!

What is the deal with Augustana this year?? Let me know your insights

  16. 20 Anonymous March 7, 2010 at 10:21 pm

I mean they are ahead of Wayne State currently, but they haven’t really played anyone other than Nebraska Kearney?

  17. 21 huskie10 March 7, 2010 at 10:48 pm

I am starting to think that the team to beat is either Minnesota State or Winona State

  18. 22 Wow March 7, 2010 at 11:06 pm

I do believe St. Cloud is right there.

  19. 23 imafan March 7, 2010 at 11:28 pm

The MN State WSU match-up will occur tommorow. WSU beat Lynn Again Today 10-6. The bats seem to be working, Pitching is solid and defense is doing very well.

  20. 24 cu17dad March 8, 2010 at 6:40 am

Augie hits the Southern trip trail soon. Once they start games regularly their team identity should emerge.

  21. 25 huskie10 March 8, 2010 at 8:35 am

i really dont think St. Cloud is actually right there i mean I was at the match up of St. Cloud and winona and if Deminsky and Bir are there best to pitchers then they are in trouble because Winona should have swept them.

  22. 26 numberwonfan March 8, 2010 at 8:51 am

Anderson actually pitched against Winona. I would agree though that Winona has a very solid team and without them having to play MSU, WSC, SCSU, along with the team they have I would say they are the front runners. And don’t forget Southwest with them not having to play WSC, SCSU, Concoria, UIU.

I still don’t understand how a true conference champion can be crowned with not play 4 teams/16 games. It’s a lot about not only who you play, but when you play them. But you still have to beat the best to be there at the end.

Good luck to all teams as the NSIC is right around the corner!
