NSIC Office Finds NO Worthy Players and Other News

Blind Ump

Last year, during the preseason, I called out the Northern Sun Conference for their choice for Pitcher of the Week.  Last Years Rant

I guess they were concerned I’d do that again so this week they made the decision to not name a Player or Pitcher of the Week under the excuse that not enough games were played.  NSIC Week 2 Release

So was anyone worthy this week?  How about –

  • Wayne State’s Nick Bidroski goes 4-4 in his doubleheader with 2 runs scored, 3 RBI’s.  His 4 hits included a homer and 2 doubles.
  • Augustana’s Nate Baumann goes 5-8 with 3 runs and 2 RBI’s
  • Augustana’s Charlie Dubanoski goes 4-5 with 2 runs scored and 5 RBI’s to go with a stolen base and throwing out a base stealer

Those seem like pretty good efforts to me and worthy of recognition!

That said, the only pitcher worth mentioning was Austen Wisroth of Wayne State who pitched 1 2/3 innings of shutout ball with 3 strikeouts.

Sorry I forgot to mention You couldn’t have picked any 3 better for Player of the Week. That’s some great hitten this early in the year. And thanks for careing enough to mention “fish”.

  3. 3 Wow February 18, 2010 at 9:28 pm

Great you can at least get some info on the game.

  4. 6 Wow February 18, 2010 at 11:25 pm

How did the boy do. Looking forward to the 2 double headers this weekend at the dome.

  5. 8 Wow February 19, 2010 at 8:32 am

That’s great and yes it is fun at the Dome.

  6. 9 Baseball February 19, 2010 at 9:18 am

Only two teams played last week. that is why the NSIC didn’t have a player of the week.

  7. 10 Wow February 19, 2010 at 9:26 am

Then they can take into play these two teams players stats and add to the next week. That would be fair to everyone I would think. Just a thought. The way the weather looks don’t know how many games will get done other than at the dome this weekend.

  8. 11 fishingmn February 19, 2010 at 10:00 am

To be fair, I kinda like tweaking the Conference office. It creates a reason for debate.

    • 12 WSCDad February 19, 2010 at 2:39 pm

The NSIC is a joke. They haven’t even updated the baseball statistics since 2/9. Must be the grueling time of year when the winter and spring sports overlap. Wish WSC could find their way into the MIAA – it is such a strong baseball conference.

I am looking forward to visiting the fair city of Minneapolis next weekend. See you there Plash.

I know this is off the topic, but I am just wondering whats going to happen when the Vikings get their new stadium. I hope the new stadium they will be able to play baseball there also. Its a great asset to have a facility like that for the northern teams to play in. I also noticed the Gophers are also playing their home games there.

  10. 14 Wow February 19, 2010 at 11:16 am

I often thougt the State of Minnesota should have bought the Dome. They want to give it to the Vikes for $1.00 and they don’t want it.
They could have made it the Gopher’s home field for football, (didn’t have to build new stadium) and baseball.
Don’t know all the issue’s with the Dome, but what are they going to do with it.
I will never understand why the Twins didn’t build a retractable roof.

  11. 15 cu17dad February 19, 2010 at 12:13 pm

The land Target Field is built on did not have enough space for the footings for a retractable roof. It would have added much more money to the cost.

The Vikings (I believe) will leave Minnesota when their lease is up and move to LA

Your feature picture of the umps in the NSIC – a classic!!

  13. 17 IMAFAN February 19, 2010 at 10:49 pm

Watched Jr. play last night. I am impressed. Nice swing!

    • 18 John Plasha Sr. February 20, 2010 at 11:09 am

Cool. Thanks for the complement. We’ll be in town for the games at the Dome Friday-Ssaturday. I’ll have to look you up if your there.

  14. 19 wow February 20, 2010 at 1:06 pm

Augie won 10-0 and 8-2 last night. It will be a tougher test tonight.

  15. 21 IMAFAN February 20, 2010 at 3:00 pm

Perhaps we can grab lunch after the game on Saturday? I am having the team over Friday night for supper if they win. If not I am sure I can find a bunch of chores for them to do?!

  16. 23 Wow February 21, 2010 at 1:14 am

Augie split with Nebraska-Kearney. Augie gave up 7 runs in the first inning of the first game and end up losing something like 11-3. Augie won the second game 7-4. Some good hitting by the lower part of the lineup helped in this win. So Augie goes 3-1 for the weekend.

    • 24 John Plasha Sr. February 21, 2010 at 10:11 am

Who pitched for NK in the first game? We had a kid named Loschen (Pre-Season All-American) pitch against us which was a tough way to open the season. No wonder we could only muster up 1 run.

  17. 25 Augie February 21, 2010 at 10:55 am

Same two pitchers threw for UNK last night that Wayne saw. Loschen game 1 and Oconner game 2. Scores were 12-3 (8 runs in first inn) and 7-3.

    • 26 John Plasha Sr. February 21, 2010 at 11:24 am

Well I was glad to see you guys enacted a little revenge for the NSIC by winning 1 against NK. They seam to have a pretty good little team. I think they may be a tad underated at # 5 in the RMAC. Loschen isn’t the only A-A on the team either. The 3rd baseman (Cover) was 2ed team also and he swings a pretty nice stick. Good ball club all around.

  18. 27 cu17dad February 21, 2010 at 7:17 pm

CU Split with Nbraska Kearnet Sunday morning. Brenden Furrow hit a HR in bottom of the 8th to win 4-3. Nebraska Kearney won game 2 by the same score. Cover from NK was 1-6 in the DH. The pitchers from NK hit the strikezone well but not overly impressive. They played small ball very well and hit run with good effectiveness. Their CF had great range.

CU played very well at times. They committed several errors in game one and overcame them to win. The CU pitchers did an excellent job keeping the ball down and in play.

  19. 28 TC February 21, 2010 at 8:06 pm

It looks as though Cover played SS against CU.

  20. 29 imafan February 22, 2010 at 7:55 am

SCSU and WSU split last night. Second game a heartbreaker for WSU. Great pitching in both games. The bats are working for WSU right now anyway.

  21. 30 huskie10 February 22, 2010 at 11:27 am

Imafan I was unable to get to the game any game details for us, how did deminsky and bir look. What about the mueller kid??

  22. 31 Wow February 22, 2010 at 12:10 pm

I listened some to the games last night. Deminsky and Bir got hit pretty good. Winona hit the ball very well. Mueller lead off the season with a triple on his first pitch of the season. Also Joe Kley and was 4-6 on the night. Mueller pitched well in the second game for 5 innings, but Winona blew the second game by loading the bases in the 6th with a error and two walks, then a 2 run double.

  23. 32 IMAFAN February 22, 2010 at 1:33 pm

    Excellant summation Wow;
The only thing I would add is it semmed like all the pitchers were hitting thier spots and changing speeds nicely. The umpire in the second game was having a little trouble keeping up with the quality of pitches but its the begining of the season for them as well. When WSU went from a righty to a lefty with different favorite locations was when it changed the game. The ump wanted the lefty to hit the same spots the righty did and he didn’t. The walks & the error were too much with the spots that SCSU’s pitcher was hitting and if you gettem you throwem. I Don’t know his pitch count but it seemed OK though its early yet? I am sure the SCSU coaches were reluctant to make a change with the second ump and establishing a new strike zone with a confused ump.?

  24. 33 huskie10 February 22, 2010 at 1:49 pm

ya I heard from some parents that the lefty that relieve mueller was up in the zone and just couldnt find it. But from what i have heard now is that Winona looked good. St. Cloud second pitcher was really tough. One parent told me that Mueller was unbelievable all day. They really talked about some catch and double play he made?? But good luck to both teams rest of season

  25. 34 cu17dad February 22, 2010 at 1:50 pm

So he reminded you a bit of the picture at the top of the blog?

The NK CU 2nd game plate ump had a tight but very consistent strike zone. Very few walks but many called strikes to keep hitters agressive. A few head shakes on strike calls from both teams but no real verbal complaints from either dugout.

There more questions about base calls than plate calls. The players played and the umpires facilitated the game. Smooth and moved along nicely.

  26. 35 Anonymous February 22, 2010 at 3:09 pm

Augie and NK games had a older ump that missed plenty of calls. Luckly didn’t really affect out come of game, just some kids averages.

  27. 36 Anonymous February 22, 2010 at 3:11 pm

I see CU has 4 games coming up with NAIA teams. Should be a cake walk. Pad those stats.

  28. 37 Wow February 22, 2010 at 3:30 pm

Some NAIA teams can be pretty good.

  29. 38 WSCDad February 22, 2010 at 3:41 pm

Wayne and Winona squaring off with a 4 game series over the weekend. Should be some good baseball – I hear the weather is going to be great!

  30. 39 Wow February 22, 2010 at 3:57 pm

    I will predict a split.

  31. 40 imafan February 22, 2010 at 5:15 pm

Mueller had a real web jem. The ball was hit over his head hard to center. He turned around (and is very fast as previoulsy discussed) and made a Willi Mays type over the head on a dead run catch followed by a 1 hop strike to first from way out in center. It was very remarkable.

  32. 41 cu17dad February 22, 2010 at 5:32 pm

St John’s should be a win win. Kansas Wesleyan is an excellent program could be tough go.

Lippincott made a two step drop and thenfull out dive into the hole on a ground ball and quickly gathered his feet then threw the left handed batter out by 2 or 3 steps.

I am looking forward to seeing the stellar players in the conference. Several teams have superior players. CU is young but very scrappy.

  33. 42 imafan February 22, 2010 at 6:03 pm

Should be 68 and overcast. The roof looks like darker clouds. Baseball weather for sure.

  34. 43 Anonymous February 22, 2010 at 6:18 pm

I heard the heating system went on the brink. They can’t figure out how to turn off the Air Conditioning. The blowers from center field are stuck on high blowing in from center. They say it may take 6-10 days to figure it out.

    Just jealous I guess.

  35. 44 cu17dad February 22, 2010 at 7:02 pm

It was quite chilly on Sunday morning for the fans just right for the players. I appreciate all of the lights on this year. Last year the lights were not on full.

Watch out for the roller bladers in the concourse

  36. 45 cu17dad February 23, 2010 at 9:23 am

Hopefully the NSIC baseball stats will be updated soon.

Last date for update was 2/9/2010. Been a few games by conference teams since then

  37. 46 WSCDad February 23, 2010 at 9:27 am

Guess I better take a jacket and sunglasses. Sunscreen? I heard you can get a really bad burn on overcast days!!

Split is possible if the Cats continue there hitting woes. .252 team batting average won’t last. If the rest of the kids start to hit it like Birdie and Plash I think Wayne gets at least 3. The pitching staff has done well to date.

Regardless, I am looking forward to watching a little baseball.

  38. 47 FYI February 23, 2010 at 11:10 am

Winona mashes 1-9…..cats pitching will have to be at their best yet

  39. 48 imafan February 23, 2010 at 12:48 pm

we got 89 cents riding on this allready don’t forget WSCdad. New rule – no one pays in pennies!!

  40. 49 WSCDad February 23, 2010 at 1:03 pm

I can’t bring any pennies anyway, the airline would charge me for the extra weight. maybe we should just make it an even .90.

I expect that the cats pitching will be good and the hitters to begin to take shape. As I said before, slow start last season. Hopefully they will get it all together a little quicker than last year.

  41. 50 imafan February 23, 2010 at 1:31 pm

90 cents it is. I believe we are going to entertained quite nicley this weekend!

  42. 51 WSCDad February 23, 2010 at 3:23 pm

I’m counting on it. I’ll be the guy pacing around when 3 is at bat. Never found a way to sit still when the boy is playing – you would think after all these years it wouldn’t be like that.

See you this weekend. Early flight Friday morning – straight to the dome from the airport. Will there be any food there or should we eat on the way?

  43. 52 cu17dad February 23, 2010 at 4:55 pm

No amenities in the dome. Vendo land is near the security station. I suggest you eat before or grab something before going in.

  44. 53 Anonymous February 23, 2010 at 9:47 pm

Bring a cooler full of pop, water, goodies. Also can be along walk to the restrooms.

    • 54 John Plasha Sr. February 23, 2010 at 10:20 pm

I’ll be happy just to get there. Just heard the weather report and guess what? They’re talken about another blizzard here on the east coast!! Starting Thursday AM it’s sure to impact my flight out Thur. evening. I’ll be lucky to get out Friday PM. I’m keeping my fingers crossed but it’s not looking to good.

  45. 55 Wow February 23, 2010 at 10:32 pm

Saying a prayer for ya John. I don’t know if our kids will get the games in this weekend.

    • 56 John Plasha Sr. February 24, 2010 at 5:39 am

Why, are they calling for bad weather out there also?

      • 57 fishingmn February 24, 2010 at 7:40 am

Mostly sunny and near 30 all weekend here in the Twin Cities. I think Wow is referring to Augustana’s games in Missouri which are outside and face the dual threat of weather and bad fields.

  46. 58 John Plasha Sr. February 24, 2010 at 8:48 pm

I got ya. That makes sense. Wish I could get to the twin cities but it’s not looking good right now. They are already canceling flights tomorrow. I guess it just wasn’t meant to be.

    • 59 John Plasha Sr. February 25, 2010 at 11:02 pm

Well it just goes to show that you can’t keep a good Philly boy down. I’m sitten here in my hotel room in no place other then the “Twin Cities”. Lets play some ball! See you all at the Dome in the AM.
