Wayne State & Augustana Have Tough Day in Colorado

Wayne State1  augustana

Wayne State entered the season confident and on a high after winning their 6th straight Northern Sun league title in 2009 and with rankings among the Top 20 in all 3 preseason Division 2 college baseball polls.  On Saturday the Wildcats, ranked #2 in the Central Region by the National College Baseball Writers Association, faced off in a doubleheader against Central Region’s #10 ranked Nebraska Kearney in La Junta, CO.

The Lopers, who were only 26-32 in 2009, swept the 2 games by scores of 6-4 and 6-1 to drop Wayne State to an 0-2 start for the season.  To add insult to that start, bad weather forecast for Sunday has already forced the cancellation of the 2nd scheduled doubleheader and the Wildcats will head back to Nebraska until next weekend when they can travel to Kansas to play Pittsburg State.  Lopers Sweep #14 Wayne State

Augustana (1-3) didn’t fare any better on Saturday as they lost 2 games to Colorado School of Mines and gave up a ton of runs in the process.  The Vikings gave up 11 runs in each of the 2 losses, losing 11-6 in game 1 and losing late in game 2 by a score of 11-10.

The losses by Augustana may have even been worse than Wayne’s.  The game 2 loss was taken by Brett Severtson who entered the year as a 2009 NSIC 2nd Team All-Conference selection and Augustana’s most reliable pitcher.  In addition, Colorado Mines was the worst team in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in 2009.  The team finished the season with a 10-37 record.  The teams are scheduled to play another doubleheader today.  Augie Baseball Drops 2 Games

Augie’s pitching is struggling big time. Mines had 26 hits for the day and Augie had 22 hits. You can’t walk a guy and the throw 3 wild pitchs to score the tieing run late in the game. 7 error’s for the two games don’t help.
Haven’t seen any stats on the Wayne St. games. Wonder what went on at those games.
Lets hope this is not a sign for the season.

Wayne pitched well and didn’t hit much – only 3 hits in game 2. Just like last year, Voth with no support. A couple of outfield errors hurt.

Hard to get started when you don’t get outside. Very slow start to last season and they came around pretty strong. I expect much the same this year.

Having been there in person I have to agree with your assesment. Wayne had the look of inmates just getting released from solitary confinement after being inside all winter. And yes, I’m sure they will come around just like last year. At one point when they came back from the spring trip to Georgia they were 4 + 5 and look how good things turned out in last May.

On another note if anybody ever gets a chance to visit Colorado be sure to check out Colorado School of Mines. “What a Facility”!! With WSC’s games on Sunday canceled due to cold weather and snow I killed some time waiting for my flight by visiting Golden Co. and the CSM complex. I was hopeing to catch the double header scheduled there with Augustana and CSM. Those games also fell victim to 3 inches of snow so I had some time to look around. The pictures on their web site don’t do it justice. By far it’s one of the nicest parks I’ve ever seen and the view of the surronding area is 2ed to none. If anybody ever gets out that way stop and see it. You won’t be dissapointed.

Concordia plays Kearney in the dome next weekend. Hopefully I will be able to gather some data on the Golden Bears

  4. 5 Wow February 15, 2010 at 7:37 pm

What a game going on at the Dome. Top of 10th tied Concordia and St. Cloud. Score 7-7. Concordia scored 6 in the top of the 7th to tie it.

  5. 6 Stanger February 15, 2010 at 8:37 pm

St. Cloud walk off HE in bottom 12 after devries hits his second HR of the night in the top half.. No way second game is getting past 4th inning

  6. 7 huskie10 February 15, 2010 at 8:47 pm

that first game was crazy. I highly doubt game two gets done also. But one question for fish, with the St. Cloud series coming up with winona, i know you have are taking some time away from blog with your son not playing in the conference anymore, i would really like to see a winona state preview like u did for some of the other top teams, if you have time of course. unless i missed u posting about it already. thanks

2nd game made it to the bottom of the 4th. Concordia has a 1 – 0 lead coming up to bat in the 4th. Hopefully the game will be completed outdoors at St. Cloud when CU travels there.

  8. 9 Wow February 16, 2010 at 9:14 am

I don’t know what the rules are for these games, but they should finish all of them or none of them. Duluth and SMSU is another example of a game that should be finished.
Was hooping CU would have pulled that one out. Exciting game.

    • 10 John Plasha Sr. February 16, 2010 at 8:02 pm

      Hey WOW,
Check out my post in “First Weekend of Northern Sun Play” It refers to the NCAA rules pertaining to complete games. The way I read it you don’t have to play all 7 for it to count as a complete game.

  9. 11 Wow February 16, 2010 at 4:13 pm

I don’t know if Augie is playing a DH against Nk on Friday and on Sat and then Concordia playing NK a DH on Sunday. Hope they save some pitching for Concordia.

  10. 12 imafan February 16, 2010 at 5:26 pm

Why no player and pitcher of the week?? I would be disapointed if I were Bauman!? The guys been doing really well.

    • 13 Wow February 16, 2010 at 7:14 pm

I don’t understand this either. It can’t be that hard to pick a few players. Plenty of guys did well enough to get player or pitcher of the week.
Maybe they should just quit it altogether.

      • 14 John Plasha Sr. February 16, 2010 at 7:43 pm

Several other deserving kids as well. What about Dubanoski (4 for 5, 5 RBI’s, 1 HR) or Bidroski (4 for 4, 3RBI’s, 1 HR). Looks like there’s plenty of deserving players to me. I don’t understand either.

  11. 15 imafan February 16, 2010 at 6:03 pm

    Question;
What is a good fly-out to Dinger ratio. Is 1 dinger and 5 flyouts good and when isn’t it good/does it become bad at 6,7,8 or 9 FO’s:1? A dinger is good and circumstances are obviously key to the flyouts – sac-fly?

  12. 16 John Plasha Sr. February 16, 2010 at 8:12 pm

Hot off the press! WSC plays 2 in The Dome Thursday night against Northern Iowa. It’s killing me that I can’t make it. Having just found out, as you can guess they want a kings randsom for airfare. Any body know if “Live Stats” are available from there?

  13. 17 IMAFAN February 16, 2010 at 8:31 pm

Its up to the school to do it – CU did it and also another, but some didn’t.

    • 18 John Plasha Sr. February 16, 2010 at 8:39 pm

Well I’m outa luck then. We haven’t even published our Media Guide yet so I know “Live Stats” aren’t gonna happen. I’ll have to check Northern Iowa’s site to see if they are gonna do em. It’s useally up to the home team but since we’re both on the road I don’t think I’ll have any luck there either.

      • 19 Mauer February 16, 2010 at 8:59 pm

        Hey John,
I know how it is. I think the games are against Upper Iowa. Doubt they will have Live Stats anywhere. If they don’t, I’ll keep you posted on what is going on. Maybe I’ll give you some text updates if you want. I can get your number via the boys.

  14. 20 Wow February 16, 2010 at 8:53 pm

Sometimes they have a problem with the live stats at the Dome. Glad I am that close so I can drive.

  15. 21 John Plasha Sr. February 16, 2010 at 9:15 pm

    Mauer,
Glad to hear from you. And yes you are correct. It is Upper Iowa. I stand corrected. As far as the text updates go remind me to send you a Christmas card. That would be great.

  16. 23 huskie10 February 16, 2010 at 10:28 pm

    Fish any preview on winona

  17. 24 Stanger February 16, 2010 at 11:24 pm

Thought the fact the the Panthers dropped baseball was a well known fact.. guess not

  18. 25 John Plasha Sr. February 17, 2010 at 7:09 am

What is a well known fact to those of you in the mid-west isn’t necessarly common knowledge to us Philly boys allthough if you check out the post made 16 Minutes after my first one you’ll see I made the correction. Anybody else care to beat this dead horse?

  19. 26 imafan February 17, 2010 at 8:00 am

    comon get with the program!

  20. 27 cu17dad February 17, 2010 at 8:44 am

No horses here. CU does not play UIU again this yhear. Hope you defeat htem soundly. I know a few players on UIU team from coaching experiences. UIU should be a decent team this year again.

Should be on the schools website if Live Stats are available. I know CU DH against Northwestern was not because internet connection was down.

  21. 28 imafan February 17, 2010 at 9:10 am

what, ya from nort Dakota or somtin der sven. Don’t cha know dat U-per Ia team bought da farm. Ya sure you betcha dey did, ey.

  22. 29 cu17dad February 17, 2010 at 1:00 pm

I sent an email to the Sports Communication Director at Upper Iowa asking about the availability of LIVE STATS at Thursday’s games When I receive a response I will post it.

  23. 30 cu17dad February 17, 2010 at 1:41 pm

Upper Iowa states there will not be LIVE STATS on Thursday.

    • 31 Anonymous February 17, 2010 at 1:52 pm

Thanks for the Info. Speaking of emails I sent one to the NSIC people asking why there was no pitcher/player of the week. I’ll share any reply if and when I get it.

    • 32 Stanger February 17, 2010 at 1:52 pm

Live stats arent too tough.. its a shame all athletic departments dont make more of an effort to post them regularly

  24. 33 cu17dad February 17, 2010 at 2:25 pm

I contacted the AD at WSC and the answer is no LIVE STATS. The home team SID handles the STATS and neither school will be taking an SID

    • 34 John Plasha Sr. February 17, 2010 at 6:40 pm

This one might get me in trouble but would that be the same guy who missed the deadline for submitting athletes names for consideration of All-American honors?

  25. 35 Wow February 17, 2010 at 7:41 pm

John, I got a kick out of that one. That may be sad but true.

  26. 36 IMAFAN February 17, 2010 at 8:14 pm

Sounds like there should be a few SID vacancys some time soon at some universities? Maybe they are tenured and thats why they don’t have to do thier jobs!?!?

  27. 37 Wow February 17, 2010 at 8:31 pm

With all the time, money, and sacrifices parents give for the kids not only to play baseball, but to go to college, I don’t think the people in charge of things like live stats give it a thought that parents would at least like to know how the team and kids are doing.
I do know that internet service at the Dome sucks. Probably worse now that the Twins are gone.
We all know baseball is not a money sport so you get the
    bottom of the barrel.

  28. 38 FYI February 18, 2010 at 11:23 am

The SCSU and CU game was available through Live Stat…so I dont see how the dome is the main cause for not providing fans that cant travel this opportunity. Its put solely on the shoulders of the SID and their committment towards their athletics and fan base.

  29. 39 Baseball February 18, 2010 at 11:30 am

true about live stats. The SMSU vs. UMD games had live stats, but the SMSU SID was there and did the stats and PA. Not sure about other teams. I don’t think you can fault a school for not sending an SID when a game is added and they may have home events in other sports, etc. Just a thought.

  30. 40 cu17dad February 18, 2010 at 11:49 am

CU’s game with Northwestern did not have STATS due to internet being down. Too bad someone from the area cannot run STATS for teams out of the Minneapolis area as a conference service.

A late addition game probably does mess with SID schedules. Just unfortunate the parents unable to travel are the losers in this situation.

  31. 41 imafan February 18, 2010 at 1:48 pm

Is the SID the only one who could do this? I find that hard to believe.

  32. 42 Baseball February 19, 2010 at 9:24 am

who else you suggest? do parents have the stats program? the live stats program? internet card? Of course anyone could I suppose, but you have to have the equipment I believe

  33. 43 imafan February 24, 2010 at 9:21 am

The SID is the only person out of hundreds of faculty, assistants, with assistants and volunteer positions at a U? Comon. Everyone in a public sector job is overworked and underpaid. Just ask the Greek govt. employees who are striking today in thier bankrupt country. I want a job that you would earn tenure at and work 9 months out of the year.
