The National College Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) released their NCAA Division II Preseason All-American Baseball Teams on Tuesday this week. They named a First Team, Second Team, Third Team and Honorable Mention Team for the upcoming 2010 baseball season. In all, 12 players from the Northern Sun Conference were named to the teams. Those players were:

As is typical, when a team is announced one of the first things to do is look and see if the Writers got it right. Right away the Northern Sun Baseball Blog readers started commenting about the immediate injustice of leaving Wayne State’s Joe Wendte off of the team. Wendte was recognized as the Northern Sun Conference Player of the Year in 2009 and was on the NCBWA Third Team All-American Team for 2009 (higher than any other Northern Sun player). In reading the fine print for the award I did notice that players needed to be nominated by their school’s Sports Information Director. Earlier today I verified that Wayne State’s SID mistakenly missed the deadline and therefore, Wendte’s name was never submitted. Kind of a shame for a player that would most certainly have been 1st or 2nd team as he had a better year than Nate Baumann did who made the Second Team squad.
The one player that jumps out at me as maybe not belonging on this list would be Lucas Wilsing of Upper Iowa who was nominated as a Utility Player. Wilsing didn’t make the NSIC 1st or 2nd team All-Conference Teams in 2009 and there are a number of players that jump out at me that would have been better choices (although I’m not sure they were nominated). Anders Engberg (Minnesota Duluth) had stats as both a pitcher and batter that exceeded Wilsing and he was 2nd team All-Conference. Tony Mueller of Winona State is another player that might have been a better batter/pitcher option as he was a much better hitter than Wilsing, although not as good on the mound. It’s fun to debate anyway.
On another note, I did confirm that Eric Bond, Wayne State’s 2009 Newcomer of the Year and a key offensive contributor, will not be back with the team in 2010.

And as for the baseball writers, well I watched how inconsistent they were last year with rankings and such and take this with a grain of salt. How lazy can baseball writers be to need to have SID nominate and not do the research themselves. And as bad as these tools are – the Ping boys are even worse.
The good news is none of it matters right now – when it matters is in May and Joe will be on the team then, as will some others from WSC.
Why no Bond? Did he graduate?

It was Coach Disch I talked to who confirmed the news about Bond.
Kind of a shame for a player that would most certainly have been 1st or 2nd team as he had a better year than Nate Baumann did who made the Second Team squad.
Remember that Baumann had a serious wrist injury and at first they thought his career would be over, then they didn’t think he would play untill half the season was over. Didn’t swing a bat from May 29th 2008-Jan 5th 2009th. Did start slow at the beginning of the season but ended up with a nice season.
The wrist injury required surgery with a cast.

I hadn’t seen any news you had posted on Bond other than he wasn’t on the roster. I had known for a couple of months he wouldn’t be – I just thought it would be better coming from the coach.

If you were referring to Baumann, that was a year ago. This Summer he played for the Eau Claire Express and had a very good summer with them.
I hadn’t noticed he wasn’t on the roster until Wow posted it the other day. It’s one of those things you hear a lot earlier when your kid plays on the team, just like I hear the details about lots of roster situations going on at UMD.
True about knowing some of the inside scoop from sons, but isn’t it usually just kids leaving for more/some playing time. Is Bond transfering to another school? He won’t be eligable to play unless he gets the magic govt created permission from both parties that the socilists with the NCAA set-up to benifit everyone of course except the kid?
Based on this info obtained from the NCAA Website, it appears that Eric could be eligible to play immediately. And it seems that with the exception of the Revenue Sports – of which DII Baseball is NOT – the rules are in fact set-up to benefit the kids. As much as I dislike the NCAA they aren’t the evil machine you make them out to be.
As for what happened to Bond, it is personal and I am going to leave it that way. Good luck Eric.
“The general rule for all student-athletes transferring from one four-year institution to another four-year institution is that they must spend one academic year in residence at the school to which they transfer before they may be eligible for competition. However, you may be eligible immediately upon transfer if you meet one of several transfer exceptions. [Note: During a student-athlete’s initial year of collegiate enrollment, he or she only may use a transfer exception if they have been certified by the NCAA Eligibility Center as a qualifier.]
The most common transfer exception is the One-Time Transfer Exception. To be eligible to use this exception: (a) a student-athlete must be transferring to another four-year institution to participate in a sport other than Division I baseball, Division I basketball, Division I men’s ice hockey and Division I bowl subdivision football (A participant in championship subdivision football at the institution to which the student is transferring may use this exception only if the participant transferred to the certifying institution from an institution that sponsors bowl subdivision football and has two or more seasons of competition remaining in football or the participant transfers from a football championship subdivision institution that offers athletically related financial aid in football to a football championship subdivision institution that does not offer athletically related financial aid in football); (b) the student-athlete’s first transfer from one four-year college to another four-year college; (c) the student-athlete must have been eligible academically had he or she remained at their previous institution; and (d) the student-athlete must obtain a written release from the current institution stating that they have no objection to the student-athlete’s use of the exception.”
How do you read that as having any benifit for the kid? It clearly states that they need permission or they have to sit out a year which would prohibit a junior from or higher from transfering. How many schools would give a top player permission? I would guess not very many. So how again does this benifit anyone but the NCAA and the schools.
The kids are on scholarship. It only make sense that if a school had invested 3 years in a kid they should have some say into what the kid does. What, if I sign a marginal kid, coach him up to an unexpected level and then let him go play somewhere else because he wants to?? GMAFB.
And by the way, the TOP school in Northern Sun Baseball (Yes Wayne is the TOP baseball program in the conference) gave permission to one of its top players to transfer. So I know of at least one!
Its DII Baseball and the kids matter.
Also, you could sit out a year after your junior year and still play. Lots of kids go to school for 5 years – they call them red-shirts. Heard of them?

DII scholorship? It amounts to barely a stipen. The kids have more money into gear than they get for “scholorship”.
It would be interesting to hear exactly how many scholarship equivalents each school gives out. I have an idea for UMD but as imafan says, when divided among 30 players it isn’t much.
The whole transfer issue is a big ongoing fight within college baseball, maybe even moreso at the D1 level. Just a couple years ago kids could transfer at any time and play the next year. This was helpful for kids who go to a bad fit or get no playing time but it led to schools recruiting players that are already playing at another college and making some mid-majors into proving grounds for players to jump to bigger programs.
Personally, I see why the rules changed along with the requirement that any kid on scholarship in D1 must get a minimum of .25 of a full ride. On the other hand, since D2 gives out so little money, most often barely enough to pay for some books & equipment, I could definitely see the argument that kids should be able to transfer without penalty. With 35 kids on the average team there are so many examples of players not getting playing time who would benefit by being in a different program (assuming baseball was that important to them).
I am not positive with D2, but I think once a kid transfers he has to be at that school for 1 year before he is eligable for a scholarship. Anyone know different.
I also think that you have to ask permission to talk to another school about transferring.

Wows point is good – before you can even begin a conversation of transfer I believe you need permission to talk to another school – they need you to verify that you can begin a conversation with them/you have “permission” – again really for the kids benefit!! (It doesn’t say that specifically in your above post)
I had heard through the grapevine I believe that when the other schools joined the NSIC that the existing schools had to/got to raise the amount of scholorship funds as the other schools (St. Cloud/Duluth/MN State) were allready giving out much more than the existing schools? (For baseball – Probably due to thier available funds from D1 Hockey?? Maybe all wet here from hear say?)

Added my picture for my Real Estate blog and it got added here too. I told my wife earlier that maybe I needed a Northern Sun Baseball hat or shirt so people would come talk to me at games.
The NCAA rules are alot like the rules for Legion baseball. The Legion coach has to “allow you permission to transfer” Which he won’t if you are in the top 50 players. These types of rules suck!
I do believe when the NCC schools changed into the NSIC for baseball they had to drop down from the 11 schollarships that the NCC conference had allowed to the 9 that the NSIC had allowed. The max amount of scholarships is the 11. Now these amounts maybe off a small bit, but the NSIC schools now have to be in agreement to raise the scholarships up the the max of which is like 11. Many schools are not fully funded and don’t want to go up to the 11 fully funded scholarships. For example, I think Augustana was fully funded with 11 scholarships in the NCC and had to drop down to the 9 now in the NSIC. Like I say I am not sure these numbers are exact but you should get the drift on what has happened.
The transfer rules are put into place so kids just don’t get up and leave program with no good players left.
Usually when 1 or 2 kids want to leave it is a personal problem with the private lives or they don’t get along with the coaching staff or can’t make the grade at that school.
Wow – The maximum # of scholarships in D1 baseball is 11.7 and the max in D2 is 9.
That said, I’d be willing to bet no school in the NSIC gives out the maximum and it’s much more likely the average is more in the 2-4 range. There are certainly some private schools like Concordia and Augustana that get creative around other monies that are used to offset the much higher tuition costs.
For many of the public institutions its pretty common for baseball players who are on scholarship to get $500-1,500/year. Not a huge amount when people think about many D1 athletes getting a full-ride. Even in D1 baseball there is no such thing as a full-ride.
Again, I will say this. Wayne State’s shortstop who was the conference new-comer of the year, hit 19 hr’s and .365 is being allowed to transfer.
Not sure where your from Ima, but apparently the coach’s you have been associated with are d!cks. Bond has a valid reason to transfer and it was granted. Simple. Maybe that is a part of what makes Wayne such a good program – they treat their players with the respect they deserve, so good kids want to come and play there.
Also, I’m pretty sure you don’t need permission to talk to anyone. The form says something like, so and so has asked us to ask you for permission to transfer.
You are right there, but it was just 1 coach. The Legion coach. In MN if you don’t excel at Legion ball you usually don’t go to college. Certainly not D1.
We won the little League State Championship. The Legion coach asked if he could take the kids at 14 and play Mickey Mantel. We jumped at the chance. He provided a rookie coach with what we thought was a bad attitude. We were wrong as this was the way he does things. No batting practice before a game. No infield before a game. The pitchers have to pitch from the stretch. You bunt whenever there is a person on base regardless. The boys started out pretty good and went down hill the rest of the season finishing about 500 in an average league. The parents got together at tournament time and made the kids come extra early to hit and take some infield before the coaches arrived. We won the State championship despite the game rules. Regions were in Oklahoma the next weekend. Very few of the kids or parents were interested in going. He had his buddy the local sports writer
bash the parents about not going. It actually made it to CNN calling me about coming up to do the story. When I told them the truth that we were not, not letting the kids go but that most didn’t want to the big story that wasn’t died.
These guys than won the sections in VFW for the first time in 26 years as 16 year olds for the HS coaches. Went to State in HS ball for the first time in 19 years. But none of them wanted to play Legion for that coach. We even tried to have another local Legion without a team sponsor us and they were willing but he Squashed it and wouldn’t release any of them.
None of them play baseball anymore except my son and his (2) best friends who were lucky enough to catch on with a team in the NSIC and MIAC respectively and are really enjoying playing the game.
So yes the coach was/is a Dick!
I think it is fantastic that Eric is going to transfer and is still playing at where ever for whatever reason – thats his buisness and thats the way it should be.
Not to mention losing a top notch player like that makes it better for the teams who play Wayne 🙂
Ima, I know the kid that is moving to short pretty well, and I think he will do a terrific job. I have watched him play shortstop for a long time now and am quite confident in his abilities.

Thats funny! I remember thinking the same thing. My son told me the hats were brand new, taken out of the box just long enough to take those pretty pictures. Hey on another note, you guys out there picken up on the nasty weather we’re looking at here in Philly tomorrow. I picked Jr. up at the airport this afternoon and he told me he was looking forward to seeing grass again. Not for long though. They’re calling for 12 to 18 starting in the AM. Now I know how you guys feel.
And our senate under cover of the blizzard is going to pass the govt. takeover of healthcare by paying off the last senators with tarp funds. Our kids are in deep trouble!

You really will have an idea of what your club is like by the time conference starts. Although Wayne was at or near .500 when we returned from our spring trip and ended up losing in the regional final, so win or lose early it will be great experience for the conference season.
Where did you find the 2010 roster for UNO. I had heard rumors about major cuts to the pitching staff.
I didn’t find a copy of thier roster. This is just what I heard as I know some of these guys. Like Waynes Excellant pitcher. Mr. Doran. He requested to play youth ball in our league and we of course accomidated him as any league should. Nice kid, good pitcher.
Yes I know Tom as well, but I talked to a former high profile player from UNO and that is what he told me personally.
Tom Doran should be a big part of the pitching staff for Wayne this year. I actually thought he should have gotten the start in our last regional game against Mesa but the coaches chose to pitch guys on a couple of days rest.
Doran pitched great down the stretch last year and I think he got a win in the conference tournament.
I think your right on with your assesment of Mr. Doran. Game that sticks out in my mind was a complete game 7 inning performance against Minn. St. down the streach in which he was dominating. Look for more of that this year. He’s a big boy and should be plenty durable.
Watched him throw a few times this summer and he is durable. Seems to have enough pitches as well. He was always good sized, but like you say he’s becoming a big young man.
