Mesa State Wins D2 Baseball’s Central Region Tourney


Mesa State defeated Wayne State (NE) 8-2 in the NCAA Division 2 College Baseball Central Region Tournament this afternoon to claim a spot in the D2 College World Series next week.  Mesa advances to the Division II College World Series in Cary, NC which kicks off on May 23rd.  D2 College World Series Site

The loss ends Wayne State’s season at 45 wins which tied them for the most in school history.  They did place 4 players on the All-Tournament Team along with 2 from the Northern Sun’s Southwest Minnesota State team.

NCAA D2 Baseball Update – Regionals End Today

The 48 teams competing in the NCAA Division 2 College Baseball Regional Tournaments have been whittled down to 2 teams left in each of the 8 Regions.  Those Regional Tourneys are scheduled to conclude today with the winners advancing to next weekends NCAA Division II College World Series in Cary, NC. 

The Central and Atlantic Regions are the only ones where the #1 seeds are undefeated.  They have 1 loss in 4 of the Regions and have been eliminated in the Midwest and East Regions.  That said, they are doing much better than #2 seeds who have been eliminated in every Region except for the Midwest where Grand Valley State must win twice to survive.

Here are the teams that remain in contention in each Region –

Central Region – Host Mesa State

Mesa State (1) vs. Wayne State, NE (3) – Wayne must win twice

Atlantic Region – Host Kutztown

West Chester (1) vs. Mercyhurst (3) – Mercyhurst must win twice

Midwest Region – Host Ashland

Indianapolis (5) vs. Grand Valley State (2) – GVS must win twice

East Region – Host Franklin Pierce

Adelphia (3) vs. Dowling (4) – Dowling must win twice

South Region – Host Southern Arkansas (8 team bracket ends Monday)

Southern Arkansas (1) plays Valdosta State (7) – loser eliminated

Winner plays Florida Southern (6) – loser eliminated

Winner plays Lynn (5) and must win twice (scheduled for Monday)

Southeast Region – Host South Carolina Aiken

Belmont Abbey (6) vs. SC Aiken (1) – Aiken must win twice

South Central Region – Host Central Missouri

No loss Emporia State(4) plays 1 loss Central Missouri (1) at Noon.

If Emporia wins, they play 1 loss Angelo State (3) who must beat them twice (2nd game Monday if needed)

If Central wins, Emporia plays Angelo and the winner plays Central in 1 final game to advance (Monday)

West Region – Host Western Oregon

UC – San Diego (1) vs. Sonoma State (3) – Winner advances
