Game 5 – Mesa State 15 vs. NM Highlands 13 Box Score
(NM Highlands Eliminated)
Game 6 – Southwest Minnesota St. 12 vs. Wayne State 28 Box Score

With 4 teams remaining the bracket now looks like this –

The Northern Sun Conference regular season champion, Wayne State, and the Rocky Mountain Conference regular season champion, Mesa State, are both undefeated and play each other in a key game today at 12:30 MDT.  SMSU and CSU-Pueblo will try to battle through the loser’s bracket.  After today only 2 teams will remain in the battle to reach the NCAA Division 2 College World Series.

Wayne State (NE) set a number of records in their big 28-12 win over SMSU.  They had 32 hits which broke the old record of 30 and 27 RBI’s tied a D2 playoff record.  Justin Hemauer set a new NCAA Division II record with 7 hits in 1 game as he went 7-8.  In fact, every Wildcat batter recorded 2 or more hits, scored a run and had an RBI.  D2 Records Fall in WSC Win

The win actually calls into question the strategy employed by the Mustangs coaching staff.  With Wayne State leading 11-2 after 4 innings the Mustangs basically decided they were going to lose and threw in the towel.  They put in a pitcher who had pitched only 1 inning all year and cast him to the Wolves (or Cats in this case) as that pitcher gave up 12 hits and 14 runs in the 1.2 innings he pitched.  The team did come back and score 12 runs so who knows how it might have turned out if they had played it straight and not thrown the game away after 4 innings.  Box Score  SMSU Stats
