NCAA D2 Baseball – Central Region Tourney

The NCAA Division 2 college baseball Central Region Tournament got under way yesterday.  The first day results were –

Game 3: (3) Wayne State 11, (4) NM Highlands 3
Game 2: (2) Minnesota St.-Mankato 3, (5) Southwest Minnesota State 11
Game 1: (1) Mesa State 17, (6) CSU-Pueblo 3

It was a good day for the Northern Sun Conference as Wayne State won the only match-up between the NSIC and RMAC.  Wayne State has made the Regional Tournament for the 6th straight year but has failed to advance to the D2 College World Series.  They won behind 21 hits on the day which was a season high for the Wildcats.  Second baseman, Nick Bidroski was a perfect 5-5 at the plate.  Wayne State Wins Behind 21 Hits

On Wednesday this week I got a chance to talk to one of the Northern Sun’s head coaches.  His team had lost at the Northern Sun Tourney so he knows these teams well.  I asked him who he thought would win the Central Region Tourney and his pick was Minnesota State.  If the Mavericks are going to win it they are going to have to do exactly what they did in the Northern Sun Tournament – play their way all the way back through the loser’s bracket after an opening game loss.  Southwest Minnesota State smacked 16 hits in their 11-3 win to advance to play Wayne State today.  The game was tied at 3-3 until SMSU picked up 2 unearned in the 8th inning and then broke it open with 6 in the top of the 9th.  SMSU Uses Late Rally to Win

CSU-Pueblo defeated Minnesota State-Mankato 13-4 today, eliminating the Mavericks from the tournament. Pueblo will now face the Wayne State/Southwest Minnesota State loser in an elimination game Saturday afternoon.

Mankato eliminated today by Pueblo. Their players are at the pool now – they said they didn’t pitch hit or catch very well. Tough to win ball games like that.

WSC vs. SWMS – Someone from the NSIC is going into Saturday in the winners bracket. My money is on the Cats!

Mesa State defeated New Mexico Highlands today 15-13, eliminating Highlands from the tournament.

In the 6th inning, Wayne State leads Southwest Minnesota State 17-3.

Barring a breakdown by WSC, it appears we will have on Saturday:

Southwest Minnesota State vs. Colorado State-Pueblo (elimination)
Wayne State vs. Mesa State (winner’s bracket)

Wayne State set several NCAA Division II Tournament records in the 28-12 win over Southwest Minnesota State Friday evening…..

    – The Wildcats’ 32 hits were two more than the previous record of 30 held by Valdosta State (1985), Lewis (1990) and Cal State-Los Angeles (2007)

    – The 27 runs batted in tied a record held by Delta State in 1981 and Florida Southern in 1985

    – The 28 runs scored was just one shy of the record 29 runs scored by Florida Southern vs. Florida Atlantic in 1985

    – The 13-run sixth inning was one run shy of the 14 runs scored by Southern Illinois-Edwardsville vs. Adelphi in 1997

    – WSC outfielder Justin Hemauer’s 7-for-8 hitting performance was a single-game NCAA Division II Tournament record. The previous record of six hits was held by five different players, most recently set by Jud Thigpen of Delta State in 2004.
