NCAA D2 Baseball – Central Region Tourney

NCAA Baseball Logo

The NCAA Division 2 college baseball Central Region Tournament got under way yesterday.  The first day results were –

Game 3: (3) Wayne State 11, (4) NM Highlands 3
Game 2: (2) Minnesota St.-Mankato 3, (5) Southwest Minnesota State 11
Game 1: (1) Mesa State 17, (6) CSU-Pueblo 3

It was a good day for the Northern Sun Conference as Wayne State won the only match-up between the NSIC and RMAC.  Wayne State has made the Regional Tournament for the 6th straight year but has failed to advance to the D2 College World Series.  They won behind 21 hits on the day which was a season high for the Wildcats.  Second baseman, Nick Bidroski was a perfect 5-5 at the plate.  Wayne State Wins Behind 21 Hits

On Wednesday this week I got a chance to talk to one of the Northern Sun’s head coaches.  His team had lost at the Northern Sun Tourney so he knows these teams well.  I asked him who he thought would win the Central Region Tourney and his pick was Minnesota State.  If the Mavericks are going to win it they are going to have to do exactly what they did in the Northern Sun Tournament – play their way all the way back through the loser’s bracket after an opening game loss.  Southwest Minnesota State smacked 16 hits in their 11-3 win to advance to play Wayne State today.  The game was tied at 3-3 until SMSU picked up 2 unearned in the 8th inning and then broke it open with 6 in the top of the 9th.  SMSU Uses Late Rally to Win

NCAA D2 Baseball – Regional Tourney Day 1 Recap

NCAA Baseball Logo

Thursday was the opening day of play in the NCAA Division 2 College Baseball Regional Tournaments.  There are 48 teams competing in 8 regional double elimination tournaments to decide the 8 teams advancing to the D2 College World Series.

It was a good day to be the underdog as the lower seeded teams won 12 times and the higher seeded only 10 of their match-ups.  In the ultra-competitive South Region the #2, #3 & #4 seeds all lost.  Two of the #1 seeds lost their opening games – Dominican lost to Wilmington (10-1) in the East Region and South Carolina Aiken lost to Belmont Abbey (6-5).

Tune into a post I put up yesterday with links to the Regions to follow the action more closely with Live Stats, updated brackets and game recaps – D2 College Baseball Regional Tracking
