 NSIC Logo

The Northern Sun Conference begins it’s Division 2 college baseball Tournament today.  The teams are battling it out for an automatic bid to the NCAA Division 2 college baseball Regional Tournament and a chance to compete for the D2 National Championship.

The Tournament is a double elimination format – the entire bracket is available here – Northern Sun Tourney Bracket

The games are being played at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud (MN).  If you can’t make it there in person you can follow all the games in Live Stats – NSIC Live Stats Link

The 6 games to be played in the first round are:

Upper Iowa  Minnesota State

Noon Game – #5 Upper Iowa University (18-13, 24-24) vs. #2 Minnesota State (25-5, 33-14)

2009 Season Series – Minnesota State swept Upper Iowa 4-0 in the opening series of the year

  • On paper this game looks like Minnesota State should be clearly favored.  They won all 4 previous meetings between the 2 teams and Minnesota State has a much better record.  The Mavericks are coming off of a tough stretch of 12 games where they were 9-3 against Concordia, Wayne State and St. Cloud State.  Upper Iowa does have a record of 7-5 against 3 of the other teams in the Tournament (WSU, SMSU, AU) so they can certainly challenge in any 1 game.

augustana Wayne State1

#6 Augustana (17-14, 27-21) vs. #1 Wayne State, NE (27-4, 39-11)

2009 Season Series – Wayne State won series 3-1

  • Wayne State was dominant all year and walked away with their 6th straight Northern Sun Conference regular season championship.  That said, Augustana did give the Wildcats one of their 4 league losses and played 2 of the other games close.

SW MN State Winona State

#4 Southwest Minnesota State (16-10, 26-11) vs. #3 Winona State (20-12, 29-19)

2009 Season Series – Teams split series 2-2, all 4 games won by road team

  • These 2 teams have played each other 4 times in the past 2 weeks and every time the game has been a high scoring game.  In fact, for the 4 games, the teams averaged over 20 runs combined in each.  SMSU has been a strong hitting team all year whereas Winona has had a little more balance between pitching & batting.  The Mustangs did have a couple losses this past weekend against Mary which make you scratch your head and wonder if they are coming into the playoffs playing their best baseball.
