NCAA Division 2 Baseball Rankings – 5/4/09

NCAA Baseball Logo

The College Baseball News, Ping!Baseball and NCBWA Regional rankings have been released for this week:

  • College Baseball News has a new #1 team – it’s Southern Arkansas reclaiming the #1 spot after being tied for #2 last week.  That said, the rankings this week are flawed (and have been all along).  Why are they flawed you ask?  Because last week’s #1 team, Barry, wasn’t included in the rankings at all.  Why weren’t they included you ask?  Because they didn’t report to College Baseball News.  So basically, if you fail to report to CBN you are not eligible to be ranked at all which means that a team like Barry goes from #1 to Not Ranked.  It’s been this way all along but it hasn’t happened this year with a #1 team.  Barry probably would have dropped from #1 after losing 2 of 3 this past week but whether they report their results shouldn’t drop them out.  The Northern Sun Conference’s Wayne State (NE) moves up to a tie for #18 from #24 last week.  College Baseball News Ranking
  • Ping!Baseball has been derided by some who question their rankings but they don’t suffer from the same issues regarding reporting that are inherent in the CBN poll.  This week they elevate Delta State to the #1 spot and drop Barry to #2.  There wasn’t a lot of movement in their poll this week but for the first time we do see 2 Northern Sun teams in their Top 30.  Minnesota State stays at #27 and Wayne State (NE) makes their first appearance in a tie for the 30th spot. Ping!Baseball Ranking
  • A major change took place in the National College Baseball Writers Association Regional Poll as Wayne State (NE) takes over the #1 position in the Central Region, overtaking Mesa State who has been losing regularly all of a sudden.  If this ranking carries over the the official NCAA Regional rankings it could have an impact on where the NCAA D2 Central Region Tournament takes place.  It’s interesting too that Mesa State received more 1st place votes but fewer overall points which means some voters didn’t have them in their top 2.

NSIC D2 College Baseball Regular Season Ends

The Northern Sun Conference’s D2 college baseball regular season ended yesterday with excitement in Sioux Falls and disappointment in St. Cloud.

  • St. Cloud State needed to sweep its pair of games against the Conference’s #2 team, Minnesota State, in order to preserve 6th place in the standings and a spot in the NSIC post-season Tournament.  They got the game 1 win (7-0) but couldn’t close it out and lost the back end 6-4 to fall to 7th place.  That said, it was a record breaking year for the Huskies who look to be on the upswing in the future.  St. Cloud Season Ends
  • Augustana was the lucky dog as they easily swept away last place Northern State by scores of 10-2 & 16-2 and took over 6th place.  They will head to the NSIC Tournament on Thursday in St. Cloud with a first round game against Wayne State who they played tough against during the year.  Augies Make NSIC Tourney
  • Upper Iowa averted what could have been a difficult collapse by beating up Minnesota Duluth early and often.  They swept the Bulldogs by scores of 14-6 & 12-4 to maintain 5th place in the standings.  Peacocks Sweep – Claim 5th Place
  • Wayne State swept Minnesota Crookston and in the process won their 6th straight Northern Sun regular season championship AND Coach John Manganaro got his 500th win as head coach of the Wildcats.  Congrats to Coach Mags and Wayne State on another great year!  WSC – 6th Straight NSIC Title & Mags 500th Win
  • Concordia got a little measure of satisfaction by sweeping the leagues #3 team, Winona State, by scores of 8-7 and 6-0.  The wins helped them pass Duluth for 8th spot in the standings and gave them an above .500 record in Conference.  That said, for a team picked by the coaches to finish 3rd it was a tough finish and the Golden Bears lose a number of seniors that were a big part of their primary contributors.  CU Sweeps Warriors To Win Series
  • Southwest Minnesota State again could manage just a split against the University of Mary.  In the process they did secure win #348 for head coach Paul Blanchard who becomes the winningest coach in school history.  The Mustangs finish the season in 4th place.  SMSU Splits – Blanchard Sets Record
  • Bemidji State’s season ended on Sunday with a split against Montana State – Billings Bemidji Splits w/ Billings
