Thursday NSIC Wrap For D2 College Baseball

The weather cleared enough on Thursday for the Northern Sun Conference’s D2 college baseball teams to get in the 8 games that were moved from Wednesday because of rain.

  • Wayne State swept a pair of games from St. Cloud State winning 6-5 and 7-1.  The wins keep the Wildcats with a 1/2 game lead in the Conference standings leading into what should be a sweep of 12th place Minnesota Crookston and a 6th straight NSIC regular season title.  St. Cloud State maintains a 2 game lead over Minnesota Duluth and 2 1/2 game lead over Concordia and Augustana for the 6th and final spot in the NSIC Tournament but has a tough final 4 games against 2nd place Minnesota State coming up.  If the Huskies only win 1 of those 4 games they could very easily be passed still by a team like Augustana who plays last place Northern State.  Wayne St. Recap  SCSU Recap
  • Minnesota State also swept their doubleheader to keep pace with Wayne State by beating a haggard Concordia team 9-2 & 4-1.  That second game was interesting as freshman pitchers Blake Schwartz (MSUM) and Ben Lemke (CSP) faced each other and pitched complete games.  Last year the pair were teammates at Rosemount (MN) High School were the led the team to the MN State Tournament.  In game 1, Concordia’s starting pitcher was Kirk Ingram who was making his first start after setting team records as a reliever in his 70 previous career appearances.  The Golden Bears host Winona State to finish the season.  Concordia Recap  Minnesota State Recap
  • Speaking of Winona State, the Warriors turned the tables on Southwest Minnesota State and won both games of their doubleheader 14-3 & 13-10.  Last week SMSU had swept Winona State.  The pair of wins vaulted Winona back into 3rd place in the standings ahead of the Mustangs.  Winona State was on a tear at the plate as they had 35 hits (15 for extra bases) and 8 homers.  SMSU finishes with a series against Mary while Winona heads to Concordia.  Winona Recap  SMSU Recap
  • Finally, Minnesota Duluth scored 41 runs in a sweep of Minnesota Crookston (26-18, 15-3).  The Bulldogs have had an amazing turnaround of their season as they evened their NSIC record at 14-14 and moved into 7th place in the standings.  This is a team that started Conference play 1-9, so they’ve gone 13-5 since that time.  They actually control their own destiny now as they have a 4 game series to end the regular season at Upper Iowa.  If they sweep the 4 game set they would pass the Peacocks and make the NSIC Tourney.  David Olson hit 2 homers on the day to tie the UMD career record for home runs with 39.  Minnesota Duluth Recap

There are just 4 regular season games left on the schedule for these D2 college baseball teams – hard to believe the season is almost over on the first day of May.
