Top 8 NSIC College Baseball Teams Fight It Out

The top 8 teams in the Northern Sun Conference once again battle it out today (and tomorrow) as they fight for positions in the NSIC Tourney and the NCAA Division 2 College Baseball Tournament.  Only the top 6 teams make the Northern Sun Tournament and there are only 6 games remaining to claim a spot.  As has been a season long trend – weather may play a factor today as there is rain expected across the Upper Midwest.

  • In non-Conference games played yesterday, Northern State won the battle of Aberdeen in sweeping cross-city rival, Presentation College, by scores of 7-0 and 13-3.  After beating the small D3 Christian College the Wolves were seeking games against Aberdeen High School to prove their complete ownership of the Aberdeen baseball scene.  Northern Sweep

As for the Conference games that matter today (and tomorrow) –

  • Augustana travels to Upper Iowa today for a doubleheader as the #8 team faces the #6 team in the standings.  The Augies are 3 games behind Upper Iowa but do have a chance to reach the top 6.  That said, I’m going to say the only way that happens is if they sweep the Peacocks.  Augustana does finish this weekend with 4 games against last place Northern State but if they only split today, sweeping the Wolves probably won’t matter.  Upper Iowa needs to get at least a split to keep Concordia and the Augies behind them.  They finish with 4 against Minnesota Duluth who is coming on and could certainly win 2 against them this weekend.  Augustana Preview
  • The 7th place team, Concordia, travels to play 2 games at Mankato State :).  The Golden Bears have a tough challenge ahead as they must make up 2 games on Upper Iowa while playing their final 6 games against teams in the top 4 in the standings (including 4 this weekend against Winona State).  They have to be rooting for Augustana to sweep today but more importantly they probably have to win at least 5 of 6 to have a chance.  The Mavericks are in a battle of their own as they are only 1/2 game out of first place and the regular season championship.  Right now that doesn’t look likely unless Wayne State were to lose twice today as Wayne has a very easy final 4 games against Minnesota Crookston.  Minnesota State Preview
  • Winona State (#4 team) travels to Southwest Minnesota State (#3) in a doubleheader that has already been moved from today to Thursday because of rain.  The Mustangs holds a 3 game lead in the standings over the Warriors.  This series probably won’t affect the final standings that much so it’s more about getting ready for the NSIC Tournament.  It may mean a little more to the Mustangs as they are still fighting for position in the NCAA Regional rankings and a shot at an at-large NCAA bid.  Games Moved to Thursday
  • St. Clouds trip to Wayne State has also been pushed back to Thursday.  The Huskies final 6 games are against the top 2 teams in the Conference so they haven’t sewn up a spot in the top 6 yet.  If they can split the final 6 it should certainly be good enough but they better keep a mindset of winning them all.  While Wayne State only holds a 1/2 game lead in the standings, they can probably consider a split against SCSU to assure them the league title.  That said, they are certainly out to win them all as there’s an outside shot at the #1 spot in the NCAA Central Region rankings if they do so and can overtake Mesa State (who would probably have to lose to last place Colorado Christian).  That #1 spot gives a team the chance to play at home and host the Regional Tourney which would be a big coup for the Wildcats.  Games Moved
  • Minnesota Duluth travels to Minnesota Crookston for a doubleheader today.  The Bulldogs have been playing much better lately in splitting series’ against top 8 teams and still have an outside chance to make the top 6.  They’d have to win out and get some help but they have to be feeling better about where they are headed.  Minnesota Crookston has won some unexpected games this year (SCSU/SMSU) so they can certainly beat Duluth.  This may be their last chance as they face a final series against Wayne State.  Minnesota Crookston Preview
  • Mary travels to Bemidji State for 2 games in a battle for 10th place in the standings.  The same teams split last week.  It’s Senior Day for the Beavers and their 11 seniors will play their last games at home.  Bemidji State will be losing 4 starters, their top 2 reserves and their #1 pitcher to graduation.  Bemidji State Preview

I want to thank you for keeping this blog. I read it on a regular basis. It helped me keep informed and learn more about the Northern Sun Conference. I hope it appears for the next three years at least.

Thanks cu17dad – we’ll see how long it lasts but seeing as my son doesn’t start play in the Northern Sun until next year there’s a good chance we’ll see it continue for at least 1 more year.

Also, it appears I may have offended at least 1 person with my comment about Northern State above. It was really an attempt at humor (back handed I admit) about beating up on a D3 school who probably couldn’t beat a top Minnesota high school team.

I’m certainly open to feedback on this – did I cross the line? If so, let me know and I’ll try not to offend my readers in the future.

I don’t know if you crossed any lines – last week I suggested that Northern didn’t seem to care about their baseball program in the least (they don’t even have a tarp for their field) and wondered aloud why they were even in the conference. And they better hope the high school team is weak – or they might lose!! :0

Ditto the thanks for the blog. I have enjoyed having a place to have some fun and will look forward to next year. Fishing, where is your boy playing? Maybe we will get to meet next year.

Speaking of fun, my Augie in the top 6 is looking bad. I thought they needed to sweep with Upper Iowa and although they won the first today, they are down 10-4 late in the second game.

The two one run losses to SMSU may have taken all the steam out of Augie’s chances. Good year for them as they have improved and have won many more games then last year. Also they had one of the tougher schedules in the conference. A big improvement for them and first year Coach Huber.

WSC – send me an e-mail (see the About page) and I’ll tell you. I’m not hiding it but I’m not publicizing it either.

I hope to meet many of my readers next year.
