Southwest MN State Crushes Augies 23-6

SW MN State

In an important Northern Sun Conference D2 college baseball battle – Southwest Minnesota State and Augustana started a 4 game series this evening.  These games were moved up from a planned Saturday/Sunday pair of twinbills due to expected weather on Saturday.  Augustana really needs to show up for these games as they are sitting 1/2 game out of 7th place for the final spot in the NSIC Tourney.

SMSU has shown that they can hit and they jumped all over the Augies – early and often.

As you can see from the boxscore, the final score was even a bit deceiving as the Mustangs actually had a 22-0 score after the top of the 6th inning.  It was almost reminiscent of the 34-1 shellacking they put on Minnesota Duluth early in the year.

Not only did SMSU score 23 runs on 23 hits, they had 12 extra base hits, including 3 homers.  The Mustangs were paced by Matt Bauer who was 3-6 with a double, 2 home runs and 7 RBI’s.  Greg Laughlin also had a huge game going 3-5 with 3 extra base hits and 6 RBI’s.

I do not know if anyone will talk about the second inning in the first game when a SMSU batter hit into a double play to end the innning, we thought.
That would have ended the inning with no score for SMSU. With the entire Augie team almost in the dugout, the ump all of a sudden called a catcher’s interference. Everyone was like what just happened. The catcher said after the game that the batter hit him on the back swing. I want to know is how you hit a shot to the SS and he turns a double play when the bat hits the glove.
After that Augie just fell apart. They need to learn to shake that stuff off and play ball.
They ended up throwing two kids who have not played or pitched this year. I thought that this game was out of reach and not using the regular guys was a smart move.
I give them credit to regroup and play like they can in the second game.

From what I was told it was catcher’s interference. I don’t think the ump is just going to make it up. The key was the next batter struck out, but Augie couldn’t get the final out. It was cold out there

I’ve seen a home run off a catcher’s interference before, so its possible. Even if the batter catches a loose string hanging off the catcher’s glove its interference.

Bottom line guys is that I personally talked to the catcher after the two games had finished. He had no reason to lie and told me the bat did not hit the glove on the swing throught the zone, but on the back swing if that makes sense. Whey did the ump wait untill all the players were almost off the field. The catcher was in the dugout. You could just see the disappointment in the team. Remember the saying is the game is 80% mental.
It may not have made any differencE but it sure took the air out of the team. Nothing we can do about it now. They shook it off and came back in the second game. Augie just has to go out win their way into the tournament.
Other than that I thought the umps did a good job.

why does the umpire wait? Because that is the rule. You see how the play happens. If he hits a home run, its a home run. I talked to people who said it was the right call. He called it right away.

If it was on the backswing (Follow through) it shouldn’t have been catchers interference…bad call if that was the case

  8. 8 baseball April 25, 2009 at 7:40 pm

yes that would, but it was no on follow through. What ump would call that.

  9. 9 SCSU April 25, 2009 at 8:25 pm

I think Im missing something…anyways…SCSU had a combined no-hitter going with two outs in the seventh when Northern got their first hit…Dolan only pitcher Birr 4 innings and he didnt throw too many pitches so he’s definitely setting him up to come back against Wayne on Wed. Also Deminsky did not pitch today either, which makes me wonder if hes holding him for Wayne too…

Wouldnt be suprised to see these guys both come back on short rest from Wed. to pitch against Mankato on the Weekend
