NCAA Division 2 Baseball Rankings – 4/20/09

NCAA Baseball Logo

The College Baseball News, Ping!Baseball and NCBWA Regional rankings have been released for this week:

  • The College Baseball News poll continued with the same top 3 teams from last week – Southern Arkansas, Mesa State & Emporia State.  After that there was quite the shakeup – one of those was #4 Florida Southern who dropped to #13 after getting swept by Lynn this past weekend.  They have a chance to right the ship (or go down further) with tough upcoming series’ against Tampa and Nova.  Another team taking a big hit in the polls was last week’s #5 team, Grand Valley State, who dropped to #21.  The Lakers were 2-5 on the week which doubled their loss total for the year.  Ashland, a team that swept Grand Valley, benefited by jumping up from #13 to #5.  All in all there were 6 teams that dropped at least 6 spots in the poll this week.  The Northern Sun’s Wayne State (NE) dropped 2 spots from #23 to #25 despite going 4-0 for the week.  College Baseball News Ranking
  • The Ping! poll saw similar upheaval in their rankings which is a little different as theirs doesn’t seem to fluctuate as much.  Souther Arkansas is still their #1 team but Barry jumped up from #4 to #2 to take over the second position.  Emporia jumped from #7 to #3 and Tampa moved up to #4.  Unlike the CBN poll, Ping dropped Mesa State from #5 to #8 based on an 0-1 week.  The Northern Sun’s St. Cloud State maintained their spot at #30 in the Ping poll.  The fact that the Huskies are on the poll and Wayne State (NE) is not tends to detract from the credibility of the poll.  Ping!Baseball Ranking
  • The National College Baseball Writers published their Regional Poll.  The NCAA Regional poll is much more meaningful but it’s still interesting to see what the writers think.  Mesa State maintains a unanimous #1 and Wayne State maintained a unanimous #2.  There weren’t any changes in the rankings until you got down toward the bottom –

The oddest part of the Ping guys ranking St. Cloud and not Wayne is that they are from Omaha. It’s not like they are from SoCal and just don’t have any information. Maybe they don’t want to be labeled homers.

When you say “detracts from the credibility of the poll”, I say, what credibility?

I think it would be interesting to take these polls from the last few years and see how they ran in comparison to the final rankings. Then we would have a better idea of who was credible. Hell, maybe Ping knows what they are talking about the Huskies are in fact the best team in the conference.

Augustana just finished winning 3-4 from St. Cloud and started to hit the ball again in the last game. We lost the one game in the top of the 7th. I don’t think, but know Augustana is better than St. Cloud. I sure don’t pay attention to the Ping Poll any more. St Cloud could possibly miss the tournament. Do Augustana a favor and win all 4 against. I predict that will happen.

I think we will sweep St Cloud – will know something tomorrow as the boys are about to get on the bus.

I think Augie is the best team we have played in conference so far and hope you guys find a way into the tournament. I think you play 2 of the teams above you, so you do your part and we will sure try to do our part!! Good Luck.

I think it may be a blood bath this Wednesday, the good ol’ Huskies don’t have a whole lot of pitching after this Wednesday…I am holding out hope for that #6 spot though…

SCSU, you should get our mid-week guys – a true freshman lefty named Eric Schwieger who is 4-0 with a 5.03 era and probably another left hander – ed-shirt junior by the name of Josh Voth.

Voth has been a hard luck guy an his era is only 3.86 but he is 1-4 on the season. He only gave up 3 earned in 5 2/3 against Emporia in a game where we left 13 or 14 on base and against NW Missouri State he gave up 1 earned over 7 innings and got beat 5-1. He had a nice outing last Wednesday against Augie – 2 earned over 6 1/3 and won 7-4.

    What’s the weather looking like?

Should be a good day for ball, last i heard 60s no rain…tomorrow would be even nicer, 75-80!

With that being said, If I were in Dolan’s shoes I might split game one with Deminsky-Birr, and try to get one out this doubleheader…our 3-4-5-6 against Northern should be able to get it done, then we could have those two for next Wednesday’s DH in Wayne on full rest or save them for Mankato

This has been a very good discussion thread – appreciate all the commentary – it definitely makes it more interesting to hear other people voice their opinion than just see my own in print!

    Thanks.

See what I mean about hard luck Voth. No run support again.

Augie dominated UIU in the first game 9-0 and had them down 6-0 in the second game late, but let them back in on a couple of throwing errors that should have been outs.
Was looking for help from Winona and Wayne St. These games may have been Augies down fall. Tough schedule and no help. Lets hope they sweep the Mustangs this weekend. A tough job to say the least.
