The Northern Sun Conference has named their Players of the Week for the week ending 4/12/09 (week 10) and they are:
Jake Schmidt of Concordia was named Player of the Week. The senior from Oakdale, MN hit 5 homers in the 6 games played by the Golden Bears last week and helped the team to a 4-2 record. In addition the home runs he hit .400, had 11 RBI’s, scored 6 times and was perfect in the field. This is the 2nd time Schmidt has been recognized this year as he won the Pitcher of the Week honors in the first week of the season.
For the 2nd week in a row the Pitcher of the Week comes from Upper Iowa University. Gavin Mason, a sophomore from Naperville, IL, got his first ever collegiate start and it was a dandy. He tossed a 3 hit, complete game shutout against Winona State – the #3 team in the NSIC standings. Mason improved his record to 2-1 on the season and likely earned himself more starts.
Not to take anything away from Jake, but shortstop Eric Bond of WSC had 10 hits in 21 at bats (.476 avg), 2 doubles and 2 homeruns along with 8 runs scored and 8 rbis. Eric was also error free at short. Unfortunately, the Cats only got 4 games in last week.
I guess the long ball clouds judgment, because other than Schmidt hitting an 2 extra hr’s, the remainder of Bond’s numbers are higher in 2 less games. So, congratulations to Eric – my choice for NSIC player of the week.
I guess I would like to see the conference pay a little more attention!!
Why does it seem like every time a Concordia player has got pitcher of the week or player of the week someone complains about it?! (People hate CU that much? If so Why?, Dont think because who they played they should get it?, etc.) I know some have mentioned a time or two who else could have maybe got it when other teams players recieved it but still. I am sure Eric Bond was considered but when you hit 5 home runs with 3 in one game in all differnt parts of the field, one of those HR’s being a Grand Slam, and put up good numbers like Jake did this past week its hard not to give it to him. Also its all based on judgement by Butch and Corp. at the NSIC office. Every week there are others that could have/deserve to earn it just as much but those in the office decide for some reason or another to give it to the one they annouce. YES!, Everyone is entitled to their own opionon but I am just curious why this is, is all.
Dude, I didn’t complain about anything. I opened my comment with “not to take anything away from Jake”. The point was only that Eric did more (except for the 2 home runs) with 2 less games – that is all. And not that it matters, but one of his 2 home runs, one was a grand slam. So, in my OPINION, higher average, more runs scored, only one less rbi in 2 less games = better week.
Schmidt is a great hitter, had a nice series against WSC – although his team went 0-3. And don’t look now, but you are 5-8 in conference (That’s 8th place). Just sayin’.
I think that either pitcher in game two of the Concordia (Kimpton)-SCSU (Birr) series would’ve been a great pick for pitcher of the week as well…although you can’t argue with a shut-out!

Okay you didnt actually complain really and I maybe shouldnt put the first 2 or 3 sentences in the comment I made, but I was trying to stat in some way why Schmidt maybe got it over Bond and how its based on on reason or another. So sorry for going off the edge lil there.
The CU-SCSU series would have been a real fun one to watch this past weekend. Just wish I could have made it up there watch it.
Hey guys – keep up the debate – it’s good for my traffic 🙂
I have a conspiracy theory about Players of the Week but I’m going to hold it until year end.
You are not the only one fishingmn.
