Rocky Mountain Conference Update

One of the things we’ve been keeping an eye on all season is how the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference is doing.  This Division 2 college baseball conference will be competing with the Northern Sun Conference to fill the 6 spots in the NCAA Division 2 Central Region Tournament.  The champion of each conference tournament gets an automatic bid to the NCAA Regional and the remaining 4 spots are filled by at-large bids.

There are 8 teams in the RMAC and 13 teams in the NSIC.  Proportionally, the Northern Sun should maybe get 4 of the 6 NCAA spots but that’s not how it is necessarily going to work.

There are 3 teams from the RMAC that will definitely be in the mix for those 6 spots.  As you can see from their standings, Mesa State has now won 16 straight games and is a shoe-in to get one of the at-large bids, even if they fail to win the RMAC tourney.  The Mavericks are ranked #3 in the country in the 2 primary D2 polls and will definitely be the favorite to win the NCAA Central Region Tournament.  Colorado State – Pueblo is on a 7 game winning streak and is ranked #3 in the NCBWA regional poll.  They will get strong consideration for an at-large bid.  The 3rd team to watch for is New Mexico – Highlands.  The Cowboys have won 10 straight and are at #7 in the NCBWA regional poll.  They do have a 4 game series left against Mesa State.

An interesting thing to watch is that the RMAC teams don’t play mid-week games so their season only has 3 weekend series left (12 games) before they are done for the regular season.
