Northern Sun Easter Edition – 4/12/09

Happy Easter to all!

The weekend ended for the Northern Sun Conference’s college baseball teams with all 14 games on the schedule being played.  We have almost reached the halfway point in the Conference schedule so we can start seeing patterns and trends.  Each Conference series is super critical as teams battle to make the top 6 teams for the Conference Tourney and, more important to some, try and earn enough credibility to be among the top 6 teams in the Central Region in order to make the NCAA Regional.

Here’s a quick recap of the weekend’s action:

  • Minnesota State used two 6th inning rallies to complete the sweep of Mary.  It looks like the series in 2 weeks against Wayne State is going to go a long way toward determining the regular season champion.  Mav’s Sweep Mary
  • Winona State used a late rally to sweep Augustana yesterday and take the last 3 games of a 4 game series.  Those wins place the Warriors in 3rd place in the Conference and in position to still contend for the title.  WSU Sweeps Augies
  • St. Cloud State set a number of team records but could only manage a split for the day and weekend against Concordia.  The Huskies are in the conversation for the top spot and still get to play Wayne State & MN State.  Concordia is certainly in the mix for top 6.  Records Fall in Huskies Split
  • Upper Iowa and Bemidji also split 4 games this weekend.  The Peacocks hold the #6 spot right now – it looks likely that they are going to fall close to that line by season end.  UIU – BSU Split
  • Southwest Minnesota State fell victim to Crookston’s 2nd Conference win of the year.  The loss puts a hurt on the Mustangs Conference title hopes and snapped a 18 game winning streak that SMSU had against UMC.  SMSU – UMC Split
  • Minnesota Duluth took 3 of 4 against Northern State over the weekend.  Neither team figures to be a factor in the final Conference rankings.  It did allow the Wolves to finally break into the win column.  UMD – Northern split
  • Wayne State easily swept a weak non-conference opponent yesterday with 13-4 & 16-1 wins over Southwest Baptist.  They have got to be thinking of winning their next 6 games before facing the big Minnesota State series.  WSU Sweeps Southwest Baptist
