Northern Sun Friday Results – 4/11/09

Kids Into The Game

It was a good day for college baseball yesterday as all 12 Northern Sun Conference games got played in the warmth of an early spring day.

Yesterday, I recapped each of the 6 Conference series battles and ranked them from 1-6 based on competitiveness and post-season implications.  It was interesting that all of my top 3 series’ resulted in splits and the bottom 3 all resulted in sweeps.  Starting from 1-6:

  • Augustana won game 1 of their doubleheader (5-3) by handing Winona State starter Ross Hellenbrand (6-1) his first loss of the season.  The Warriors came back in game 2 behind a complete game by Tony Mueller to win 4-1 and earn a split on the day.  Augustana, Winona State Split
  • A pair of pitchers duels and dramatic plays were on display as St. Cloud State and Concordia split their twin bill.  Concordia won game 1 by a score of 4-3 in 8 innings on a suicide squeeze.  The Huskies came back in game 2 by getting their first 2 hits of the game in the 6th inning, a single and a homer by Sam Radbil to back up Logan Birr’s excellent pitching and win 2-1.  Rule of 4 Holds in Split
  • Upper Iowa easily beat Bemidji State in game 1 of their battle by a score of 9-0 but the Beavers started strong and held on to win 5-3 in game 2.  The Peacocks Brian Solemsaas was dominant in the early game going the distance and giving up only 5 hits in the shutout to go along with 7 K’s.  BSU, UIU Split
  • Minnesota State swept Mary from the top of the Conference standings with scores of 10-1 & 11-6.  That second game was closer than it sounds as the Mavericks trailed going into the 6th inning but got a grand slam from Geno Glynn to pull away.  Glynn had a really big day as he was 4-7 with 2 homers and 9 RBI’s during the doubleheader.  Mavericks Pull Away For Sweep
  • Southwest Minnesota State beat Minnesota Crookston by scores of 6-3 and 10-0.  The starter in that 2nd game, Jared Pick, tossed his first career shutout for the Mavericks.  Matt Bauer had 2 homers for SMSU to pace the offense.  Pick, Bauer Lead SMSU
  • Finally, Minnesota Duluth swept 2 games from Northern State winning 4-0 and 7-3.  You might not believe it but pitching was the difference for the Bulldogs.  Game 1 starter, Gary Wilfahrt Jr., threw a complete game shutout and game 2 starter, Colin Stinogal, pitched 5 strong innings.  Duluth pitchers only surrendered 1 earned run on the day.  Bulldog 9 Earns Sweep
