NSIC Midweek – Mary Likes It On Top – 4/9/09

We’ve just finished our first set of mid-week Northern Sun Conference D2 college baseball games and we are down to 1 team being undefeated in Conference play.  It’s the Mary Marauders who sit alone at 2-0!  Yes, they got there by beating lowly Minnesota Crookston but nevertheless they are #1 in the NSIC and they can feel a sense of pride no matter how the season ends.  Clip this graphic out Mary – nicely done!

In games over the past 2 days –

  • As mentioned, Mary beat Crookston by scores of 19-4 & 11-4 and were led by 3 home runs by Tyler Liffrig who was 6 for 7 with 6 RBI’s.  Liffrig Launches Marauders
  • Minnesota State swept a doubleheader from Minnesota Duluth by scores of 2-1 and 9-4.  They were led in game 1 by another excellent outing by pitcher Patrick Lenton who moves to 7-1 on the season.  Mavericks Subdue Bulldogs
  • Upper Iowa got a sweep over Winona State who had previously been unbeaten in Conference play.  They won the first game 16-15 in 9 innings after trailing 15-5 entering the bottom of the 6th inning.  They then completed the sweep with a 5-0 game led by pitcher Gavin Mason who went all 7 innings giving up just 3 hits.  Peacocks Sweep Warriors
  • Bemidji State was demolished by Southwest Minnesota State in the first game of their doubleheader yesterday by a score of 17-0.  They then returned the favor winning the nightcap 16-10 which included 9 runs in the top of the 7th inning.  SMSU had 11 home runs in the 2 games but only gained a split.  Big Comeback Earns BSU Split
  • Concordia blasted their way to a 9-5, 14-3 sweep of Northern State.  They were led by senior Jake Schmidt who belted 4 home runs on the day, was 6-9 and had 8 RBI’s.  Schmidt Belts 4 Homers in Sweep
  • Wayne State’s winning streak was ended by Augustana in game 1 of their doubleheader as the Vikings won 2-1 led by a strong pitching performance by Ezra Campbell and save by Bret Severtson.  Wayne State’s fielding woe’s continued as the winning run was unearned.  The Wildcats did come back strong in game 2, winning 10-3.  They were led by shortstop Eric Bond who was 3-4 with a grand slam.  Augies Hand WSU First Loss

I know Mary has lost several pitchers to injury. They do make contact on the ball regularly and will make you play defense. I am sure the lack of pitching depth will show up sooner rather than later.
