Northern Sun Players of the Week – 4/6/09

Players Of The Week

The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference has named their college baseball Players of the Week for the week ending 4/5/09 (week 9 of the season) and they are –

Ben Kincaid from Minnesota State was named Player of the Week.  The freshman from Eau Claire, WI was 4-7 for the 2 games against Southwest Minnesota State on Friday which ended in a split.  It was his 2 run homer in the 6-1 win that helped open up a 4 run lead.

No Hitter!

That’s what Upper Iowa’s Greg Sieck threw in the final game of a sweep against Minnesota Crookston on Saturday.  The senior from Grinnell, IA had only 2 runners reach base, 1 on a walk and the other on an error.  The Peacock’s won the game 20-0 and Sieck improved to 2-1 on the season.  I called Howard Thompson, the Sports Information Director at Upper Iowa.  They were in the process of researching if/when the last no-hitter may have been (seems like something they should keep track of?).  He had talked to head coach, Mark Danker, who believed that there might have been 1 other no hitter 13-14 years ago but he wasn’t sure if that was a full 7 inning game.

I’ve watched UIU baseball since 1971 – honestly can’t remember if/when there was another no-hitter, but I’ll be back this weekend for easter and will dig through some scrapbooks and see what I can find.

There was one year (think 1982) where we had a starting pitcher win BOTH games. Last games of the year against Luther I believe, he was a senior and pitched a complete game in game 1 and really breezed through, he started 2nd game – went 4 innings I believe and picked up win there too.

1972 Jim Parsons struck out 19 or 20 in a game and had a .72 era or the season, not sure if he ever had a no-hitter or not.

    I will check and post.

Great – thanks for checking in Peacock

Tough to beat a no-hitter for pitcher of the week, but Fr. Logan Birr of SCSU got the save in game one of last Friday’s Doubleheader vs. UMD then started game two and got the win

Did some checking – the last no-hitter for UIU was in the 70’s by Kirby Moses. He tossed the gem in Fayette against St. Ambrose.

I did follow-up when back in Fayette this past weekend. The only other no-hitter I could find starting in 1971 to 2009 was 1976 by Kirby Moses against St. Ambrose, in addition to pitching a no-hitter Kirby hit a 2-run homer that was the game winning hit/RBIs.

I also mentioned above that Jim Parson’s struck out quite a few batters in one game. I found the article and it is more amazing then I remembered. He struck out 26 – yes 26 in one game. Even more amazing is he pitched all 13 innings of the game and only gave up 1 hit – an infield hit to the first batter of the game. The Peacocks won 1-0 over William Penn. 13 innings! 26 K’s!
