NCBWA Central Region D2 Baseball Poll – 4/6/09

The National College Baseball Writers Association has released their Regional Poll for the week ending April 5th.  At the end of the regular season these are the teams that will be competing for 6 spots in the NCAA Regional Tournament.  Both the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament Champion and the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament Champion will earn automatic bids with the remaining 4 spots nominated as at-large bids.

Mesa State continues to maintain a solid hold on the top of the poll, garnering all 8 first place votes.  The Mavericks had another good week as they swept Nebraska – Kearney in 2  games over the weekend.  At this point you have to assume that Mesa will get an at-large bid even if they fail to win the RMAC Tourney as they are considered a top 5 team in the country (#3 in this week’s College Baseball News poll and #5 in the Ping! poll).

Wayne State got all but 1 of the 2nd place votes and has a solid hold on the 2nd spot.  Colorado State – Pueblo rebounded from a bad week to take 3 of 4 from Metro State this week dropping Metro out of the Top 10.  Minnesota State jumped ahead of Southwest Minnesota State even though the 2 teams split their weekend doubleheader.  Winona State made the biggest jump from out of last week’s Top 10 to the #8 position this week.  St. Cloud State, Concordia and Augustana are the other NSIC teams represented in the ranking.    NCBWA Regional Polls

NCAA Division 2 Baseball Rankings – 4/6/09

The College Baseball News and Ping!Baseball D2 college baseball rankings have been released for the week.

  • Florida Southern continues to hold down the top spot in the College Baseball News poll.  The Moccasins (31-5) have won 12 straight games (except for a exhibition loss to the Detroit Tigers which is understandable).  The top 10 teams seem to be somewhat locked down (with slight variation) but there continues to be lots of movement in the next 20.  In fact, there are 7 teams in the Top 30 this week that didn’t make the list last week and 2 teams that didn’t even receive any votes last week.  The Northern Sun Conference’s Wayne State (NE) moved up 1 spot to be ranked at #27 after splitting their 2 non-conference games and then sweeping 3 games from Conference foe, Concordia.  Four other NSIC teams received 1 vote each – Winona State, St. Cloud State, Augustana and Concordia.  College Baseball News Ranking
  • Ping!Baseball continues to keep Southern Arkansas as their #1 team but did move Florida Southern up from #6 to #2.  The Southern Arkansas Muleriders are riding an 11 game win streak including a 19-2 win over D1’s Grambling State this past week.  Ping isn’t as prone to move lots of teams around from week to week but there were 4 new teams in their poll.  The only Northern Sun team in their ranking is St. Cloud State who moved up to #26 after being ranked at #28 last week.  Ping!Baseball Ranking

Northern Sun Players of the Week – 4/6/09

Players Of The Week

The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference has named their college baseball Players of the Week for the week ending 4/5/09 (week 9 of the season) and they are –

Ben Kincaid from Minnesota State was named Player of the Week.  The freshman from Eau Claire, WI was 4-7 for the 2 games against Southwest Minnesota State on Friday which ended in a split.  It was his 2 run homer in the 6-1 win that helped open up a 4 run lead.

No Hitter!

That’s what Upper Iowa’s Greg Sieck threw in the final game of a sweep against Minnesota Crookston on Saturday.  The senior from Grinnell, IA had only 2 runners reach base, 1 on a walk and the other on an error.  The Peacock’s won the game 20-0 and Sieck improved to 2-1 on the season.  I called Howard Thompson, the Sports Information Director at Upper Iowa.  They were in the process of researching if/when the last no-hitter may have been (seems like something they should keep track of?).  He had talked to head coach, Mark Danker, who believed that there might have been 1 other no hitter 13-14 years ago but he wasn’t sure if that was a full 7 inning game.
