Northern Sun Weekend Wrap – 4/5/09

Quick – if you haven’t looked – name the 3 undefeated D2 college baseball teams in the Northern Sun Conference?

Okay, it was kind of a trick question.  Mary has a 3-17 overall record but because of weather and floods they have yet to play a Conference game.  It’s possible some teams wish that had been the case for them.

The weather was still wreaking havoc with the schedule as we saw one doubleheader moved to Monday, one doubleheader become a single game and one twin bill moved to Wisconsin.  Has the NSIC ever had Conference games played in Wisconsin before?  No idea how to check that.  In addition, the weather is already causing shifts in games that were scheduled for Tuesday (BSU Games Wednesday).

That said, there were quite a few games played yesterday:

  • Wayne State stays perfect in NSIC play dropping Concordia 4-3.  Interesting story about how the Golden Bears are now 0-9 when scoring less than 4 runs and 20-0 when scoring 4+.  Magic Number Haunts CU
  • Winona State extends their win streak to 11 games in sweeping all 4 games from Bemidji (4-3 & 2-0).  Tony Mueller again shined at plate (game 3) and on mound (game 4).  WSU Extends Streak to 11
  • Minnesota Duluth ended their 14 game losing streak in opening game yesterday (9-3) but lost the nightcap 6-5 in 8 innings after taking a lead to the bottom of the 7th.  UMD Ends Streak – Splits
  • Upper Iowa completed the 4 game sweep of Minnesota Crookston by winning 8-1 and 20-0 on Saturday.
  • Augustana won 2 close, come from behind games on Friday against Northwest Missouri State but dropped 2 lopsided games (6-2, 9-3) against the same team yesterday.  Augies Drop Doubleheader

3 weeks into the Conference season and we’re starting to see some separation at the top and bottom of the standings.

It is “scheduled” to be an interesting week as teams are playing a single Conference doubleheader on Tuesday before the regular 4 game series’ scheduled for next weekend.  The Tuesday games are home and home series with the return games scheduled for Wednesday April 15th.

Winona is no longer unbeaten in the NSIC Conference as they lost 2 games to UIU today. The first game was crazy. Winona was up 15-5 in the 5th inning and UIU went on to win 16-15 in 9 innings or so. Over 30 hits. T.Mueller there outstanding freshman went something like 1-11 today. OUCH This race for the top 6 is going to get interesting.

Wow – thanks for the report.

1 for 11 is crazy. Mueller has certainly lost the momentum he had for the non-conference portion of the schedule. Still doing great on the mound (unless that was him pitching – havnen’t checked box score yet).

I think he was actually 1-10 but no matter all good hitters get in slumps. They just have to have short slumps. A good bunch of freshman in the NSIC this year. Great for the league.
