Northern Sun Sweep Day in College Baseball

Baseball Sweep

In Division 2 college baseball action among Northern Sun Conference teams, 5 of the 6 doubleheaders played resulted in sweeps.

  • Wayne State remained perfect in NSIC action by beating Concordia 4-3 and 7-2.  Concordia outhit WSU in game 1 (6-5) but the Wildcats got the more timely hits to pull out the win.  In game 2, Wayne State got a grand slam from Mike Bisenius (2-3 w/ 5 RBI’s) in the 4th inning to break open the game and win more easily.  Alex Koch also had 4 RBI’s during the day.  For Concordia, Zane Froehlich led the team at the plate going 4-6 over the 2 games.  Wayne State Sweeps
  • Winona State got a sweep over Bemidji State to move to 6-0 in Conference games.  They won the first game 11-1 as pitcher Ross Hellenbrand (6-0) pitched 6 innings giving up just 4 hits and tossing 9 strikeouts.  The Beavers committed 5 errors and gave up 9 unearned runs.  In game 2, the Warriors won 6-1 behind more strong pitching by Evan Buhr and John Wenker who combined to give up only 6 hits, no earned runs, 1 walk and 9 K’s.  Winona State Sweeps
  • St. Cloud State swept Minnesota Duluth with scores of 3-1 & 6-2.  While Duluth pitched better than recent games, they still extended their winless streak to 14 games.  Once again the Huskies got strong starting pitching from David Deminsky and Logan Birr.  The 2 teams will try and play their 2nd doubleheader at St. Croix Central HS in Hammond, WI.  Huskies Sweep Bulldogs
  • Upper Iowa got their first wins in Conference play by sweeping Minnesota Crookston by scores of 11-2 and 7-6.  In that 2nd game the Peacocks rallied with 4 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to take a lead that would stand up.  In game 1 it was a strong pitching performance by Upper Iowa’s Brian Solemsaas who had a complete game giving up only 5 hits.  Upper Iowa Sweeps Crookston
  • Augustana was the lone NSIC team playing a non-conference series this weekend and they won a pair of close games against Northwest Missouri State (a team that beat Wayne State earlier in the week).  The Vikings rallied in both games from 6th inning deficits to win 4-3 and 2-1.  Drew Heithoff was the offensive star for the Augies in game 1 as he was 3-4 in the game.  In the 6th inning it was a single and stolen base that got him into position when JaColby Anderson plated him with an RBI single of his own.  Augies Rally For Wins
  • The lone split came in what might have been the biggest weekend series as Southwest Minnesota State and Minnesota State.  The Mavericks won game 1 by a score of 6-1 but the Mustangs took the 2nd game 5-2.  The follow up doubleheader scheduled for today in Mankato has been postponed until Monday due to weather. At the UMD-SCSU series there was talk of playing a tripleheader before and after the first game based on availability of fields and impending weather.

For those wondering there is nothing in the NSIC rules disallowing that. The only thing thats said on that is that you are allowed to finish a rained out/suspended game then play the doubleheader as scheduled.

In the games themselves, the Huskies looked good, but not great. Their pitching is definitely their biggest asset right now. Duluth looked like, well, a team that has lost 13 straight.
