NSIC College Baseball Weekend Preview – 4/3/09

Weekend Preview

This weekend brings the 3rd week of Conference battles in the Northern Sun Conference.  These Division 2 college baseball games are once again being threatened by early spring weather challenges inherent in the upper Midwest.  Almost all of the games have been moved from scheduled Saturday/Sunday doubleheaders to Friday/Saturday affairs and some have location changes.  The weather outlook looks good for games scheduled on Friday but there is a storm moving in for the weekend that may interfere with Saturday’s games.

Here are your weekend match-ups:

Minnesota State SW MN State

Minnesota State at Southwest Minnesota State – Fri/Sat

Friday in Marshall – Saturday in Mankato

2008 Series Results – 0-0 (MSUM leads all-time series 24-5)

Preview – Mavericks Set To Battle SMSU

Prediction – SMSU is first in all of D2 college baseball in winning % and a number of batting statistics but faces their first real battle this weekend as they’ve played very few games and most have been against lower class opponents.  In this week’s Northern Sun Baseball poll readers clearly favor the Mavericks to win the series (12-4).  I’ll predict a 3-1 Minnesota State series win.

Concordia Wayne State1

Concordia St. Paul at #28 Wayne State – Fri/Sat

2008 Series Results – Concordia 2-1 (WSU leads all-time series 20-6)

Preview – Amazingly good baseball release by CU – CU Weekend Release

Prediction – Before the season started this series might have been considered one of the premier match-ups of the season.  In the preseason NSIC coaches poll Wayne State was picked to finish 1st and Concordia 3rd.  While Concordia got off to their best start in school history, the level of competition was questionable and they surprisingly lost 3 of 4 to Augustana in their Conference opener.  They need Jake Schmidt to get back to dominating form as a pitcher.  I’ll go with a 3-1 Wayne State series win.

Bemidji State BeaversWinona State

Bemidji State at Winona State – Fri/Sat

2008 Series Results – WSU 4-0

Preview – None published yet

Prediction – Bemidji is a hard team to get a read on as they’ve beaten the likes of Minnesota State twice but lost to Northern State.  They played tough against Augustana last weekend.  Winona State played a tougher non-conference schedule than many in the NSIC but it’s hard to get a read on them too since their only Conference games were against Crookston.  That said, I think their starting pitching is better and I’ll predict a 3-1 series win by Winona State.

Minnesota Duluthstcloudstate_logo

Minnesota Duluth at St. Cloud State – Fri/Sat

Friday games at Richfield (MN) H.S. – Sat. games at Maple Grove (MN) H.S.

2008 Series Results – SCSU won series 4-1 (SCSU leads all-time 20-12)

Preview – None published yet but here’s a SCSU Pitcher Story SCSU Starters Undefeated

Prediction – The Bulldogs are on a terrible stretch as the team has lost 12 straight (a team record) and has seen their pitching staff crumble to a 10.47 Team ERA – one of the worst in all of Division 2 college baseball.  The Huskies are off to a great start to the season but have played one of the easier schedules in D2.  The strength of their team has been their starting pitching which leads all of D2 in strikeouts/9 innings and is a perfect 21-0 on the season.  I’m going to predict that Duluth gets off the mat and ends the streak but that St. Cloud State wins the series 3-1.

Crookston Golden EaglesUpper Iowa

Minnesota Crookston at Upper Iowa – Fri/Sat

2008 Series Results – Upper Iowa won 4-0

Preview – Crookston Travels to Upper Iowa

Prediction – Crookston did surprise everyone by taking a game from St. Cloud State in their opening Conference series but lost all 4 last week in Winona.  Upper Iowa fans must be frustrated after having numerous games cancelled due to weather and then having a 12 game losing streak (finally broken on Wednesday).  While they’ve had a difficult season to date, Crookston should be what the doctor ordered and the Peacocks should sweep.

U of Marynorthern state

University of Mary at Northern State – Update: Officially Cancelled

2008 Series Results – Mary won series 4-0

Preview – None Published

Prediction – No idea if this series is even going to be played – as of right now I’d guess it won’t be.  All that’s been announced is that the games won’t be played in Aberdeen (SD).  Mary has been on a temporary stoppage to all sports while Bismarck (ND) recovers from flooding.  No prediction for now.

For the third weekend in a row you have picked WSC to win 3. Hopefully, (and of course I am predicting – because I am a homer) for the third week in a row you will be wrong and they will get a sweep!!! We might be looking for a fourth starter though, as Lancaster threw and inning of relief yesterday. Maybe Coach is setting him up to throw against Augie on Tuesday though. Funny schedule – home and home midweek against Augie with a noncon weekend road series at SW Baptist in between. Seems like a pitching rotation nightmare.

With the series that are being played this weekend, I think that we will have a clearer picture of the conference race. At least it might be whittled down to just a couple of favorites. I am particularly interested to see if one of either MSU and SMSU is dominant over the other. And if Winona is for real they better get at least 3 from Bemidji at home. The same goes for St. Cloud vs. Duluth.

Good luck to all and good weather!!

    WSCDad,

Clearly you are paying too much attention – I’m not to be held accountable for my predictions. It’s typically pretty hard to win 4 straight games so 8 straight is impressive. Not the toughest competition but teams that have shown to be capable of beating other decent teams on a good day.

Actually – it would be fun to have other people make predictions as well.

Of course, there’s a pretty decent chance that Saturday’s games may be washed out in some places (especially Wayne which is further west) so I’d be off the hook with my predictions.

At one point I actually thought about tracking my predictions but I struggled with how to do that when picking 4 games at once. If I picked a series to be 2-2 I’d automatically get 2 right so it seemed pointless. If I had to get the exact number won correct to be considered right that seemed like a difficult proposal.

Just kidding about the whole prediction thing. I applaud your effort.

Wayne got 2 wins today = they beat a really good pitcher in the first game.

Moved tomorrows start to 10 am to try and get the games in. Good luck with that.

Augustana took two from Northwest Missouri State today. Two six inning comebacks. Nate Baumann has a hamstring pull from last week. Pinched hit once is all. Jacoby
Anderson pitching the first gametook a first inning pitch right to the head. It didn’t look good, but stayed in the game. Two good wins for them. Hope we get 2 tomorrow and then get home safe.
