Northern Sun D2 College Baseball Poll – 3/31/09

Northern Sun D2 Poll1

Each week, the Northern Sun Baseball Blog combines the 3 primary Division 2 College Baseball Poll’s into 1 composite ranking.

For the 2nd week in a row, Grand Valley State is the #1 team in our poll.  This week they maintained that position even though they are ranked #1 in only 1 of the 3 polls.  In fact, the top 4 teams all stayed in their same spots.

We continue to see continuity at the top of the polls and some wide divergence toward the middle and bottom.  That said, there are 21 teams in our Top 30 that were in the Top 30 of all 3 polls while last week there were only agreements on 19.

The biggest gainer included California State – Stanislaus which moved from out of the Top 30 into the #21 position and Texas – Permian Basin which moved from #29 up to #18.

The Northern Sun Conference is represented this week as Wayne State (NE) makes an appearance at #26.  This is the first time Wayne State has appeared in this composite poll.  St. Cloud State did receive votes but not enough to crack the Top 30.

California State – Los Angeles dropped from #13 all the way out of the Top 30.  Others dropping out this week included North Alabama, Southern Indiana, Central Missouri, Henderson Stat and Colorado State – Pueblo.

I really appreciate your effort in combining these polls. Most days I don’t even understand where the Ping guys get their information. They have 4 teams ranked in their top 20 that don’t even appear on the other polls – and then they omit a team that is top 20 in both the other polls.

Do you know why they rate teams so much differently than the coaches and writers do?

Anyway, although the 14 runners left on base against Emporia hurt a little, it is nice to see that the loss didn’t seem to hurt the Wayne boys in the rankings.

Hey WSC – thanks for the feedback.

My assumption is that Ping is really more of 1-2 guys opinions than the opinions of multiple coaches or writers like the other 2. That said, even the other polls can have outliers like CBN’s love of Florida Southern at the top of their rankings.

As I mentioned in my posting, they agree on 21 of the Top 30 which is at least getting a lot closer than it had been.

It is interesting following the movement of teams in the rankings. I am surprised the number of teams that yo yo in and out of the rankings. Baseball is a game that any team can win on a given day. Occasionally poor teams will defeat a better team.
This should not affect the rankings as much as it appears.
