Northern Sun Players of the Week – 3/16/09

Players Of The Week

With the end of the winter sports season the Northern Sun Conference has moved up the schedule for announcing their baseball Players of the Week to Mondays going forward.  NSIC Players of the Week

This week’s Player of the Week is Derek West of Southwest Minnesota State University.  West is a senior outfielder from Chamberlain, SD and helped lead the Mustangs to a 4-0 start to the season this past weekend.  In the 4 games he was 9 for 15 (.600) which included 3 home runs, 2 triples and 1 double.  He also had 7 RBI’s and 23 total bases – quite the start.

The Pitcher of the Week was Tony Mueller of Winona State.  Yes, that Tony Mueller!  This is the same player that was Player of the week last week (NSIC Awards 3/10/09) and of whom I wrote a special article talking about his amazing start (Mueller’s Blazing Start).  As a pitcher this week, the freshman from La Crosse, WI started against Lewis University and went 8 innings giving up no runs to get the win.  He only gave up 3 hits while walking 2 and striking out 9.  The Conference office press release did say he is now 4-0 on the season when in fact he is 1-1 on the season and it’s Winona’s Ross Hellenbrand who is 4-0.  Mueller has cooled off a bit at the plate.  Even though he has hit safely in every game his batting average is down to .574.

The NCAA Division 2 College Baseball rankings are out for the week of March 16, 2009.

  • College Baseball News has a new #1 team as Southern Arkansas has been elevated to the top spot.  CBN had been the only service without the Muleriders in the top spot.  Their previous #1 team, Cal State Stanislaus, had a horrendous week as they went 0-4 and dropped all the way down to a tie for 26th.  Georgia College & State was the biggest gainer as they moved from out of the Top 30 all the way up to #6.  They did that by beating Pfeiffer (last week #27) in 2 straight and sweeping 3 from North Georgia who was ranked #7 last week.  Three Northern Sun Conference teams did receive votes this week – Concordia, Wayne State and St. Cloud State.  College Baseball News Poll
  • The Ping!Baseball poll has Southern Arkansas as #1 still and there was lots of movement again this week in their rankings.  University of California – San Diego moved up 8 spots with their 4 game sweep of Stanislaus.  Lynn University moved up 11 spots with a 5-0 week which included a 3 game sweep of previously hot Nova Southeastern (who dropped to #13).  Delta State has now won 10 straight games which moved them from out of the Top 30 to the #15 position.  In their 10 wins they have scored in double digits 8 times.  Ping!Baseball Rankings
