Northern Sun D2 College Baseball Poll – 3/10/09

Northern Sun D2 Poll1

Finally, all 3 Division 2 college baseball polls have been released as this afternoon saw the release of the first National College Baseball Writers Association Poll – NCBWA Poll

The Northern Sun D2 College Baseball Poll is a combination of all 3 major rating polls (College Baseball News, Ping!Baseball & NCBWA).  It weights all the teams from 1-30, gives them an inverse number of points and then combines all 3 polls together.

The Northern Sun Baseball Blog recognizes Southern Arkansas as the #1 Division 2 College Baseball Team.  There are no Northern Sun Conference teams in the Top 30 this week but Concordia University did receive votes and would be ranked #31.

Northern Sun Players of the Week – 3/10/09

Players Of The Week

At this time last week any regular reader will know I started a rant about the Northern Sun Conference’s Player of the Week selections – NSIC Award Rant  That rant and the subsequent follow-up with the Conference office (Rant Follow-up) provided my  highest week ever in terms of blog traffic.

The easy selection this week for Player of the Week was Winona State’s Tony Mueller.  I wrote a few days ago about the freshman outfielder from La Crosse who was off to an amazing start to his college baseball career – Mueller Off To Blazing Start.  During the Warrior’s week in Florida, Mueller had a .630 batting average which included 17 hits in 27 at-bats.  He had multiple hits in every single game and even pitched an inning getting his first ever college save.

Pitcher of the Week was Kyle Schroeder of the University of Mary.  The sophomore from Dickinson, ND had a great outing against Montana State – Billings as he started and went 6 innings without giving up an earned run.  He ended up striking out 6 and allowed only 3 hits to get his first win of the season.

Preseason Favorites Continue to Struggle

As they do each year, the Northern Sun head coaches vote on the expected finish for each of the 13 teams in the Conference.  The results were one of this blog’s very first posts – NSIC Preseason Poll Released  The top 2 teams in that poll were Wayne State and Minnesota State.  Obviously, we are still in the non-conference portion of the schedule and the caliber of opponents played by different Northern Sun teams has varied greatly.  That said, the early season results certainly are not what these 2 teams were hoping for.

  • Wayne State came into the season as a nationally ranked Top 30 team but lost yesterday to Concord University by a score of 9-5.  This was the Wildcats first game of their spring trip at the Savannah Spring Break Invitational in Savannah, GA.  The loss drops the team to 4-4 on the season and the road today isn’t any easier as they face Armstrong Atlantic State University (12-8), a team that has won 6 straight games.  Catcher John Plasha had a very good game at the plate as he was 2-4 with a double and 2 run home run.  Wildcats Fall to Concord
  • Minnesota State has had an even tougher time of it lately as they lost yesterday to Ashland, 10-1.  The Mavericks could manage only 6 hits in the 9 inning game to lose to Ashland for the 2nd time in as many days.  The loss is the teams 5th in 7 games and moves their season record to 4-7.  The Mav’s continue their spring trip in Florida today with a game against Seton Hill (3-3).  Eagles Drub Minnesota State
  • With these top teams struggling a little it is probably giving a team like St. Cloud State some encouragement.  The Huskies were picked to finish 6th in the preseason poll but improved their record to 14-4 with a doubleheader sweep of Northern State (2-5) by scores of 11-1 & 5-1.  St. Cloud continues to get excellent starting pitching – starters Logan Birr & Pat DeLaHunt actually had very similar outings.  Both pitched 5 innings, both gave up just 1 run and both improved their season records to 3-0. Huskies Run Arizona Record to 4-0

NCBWA – Regional Poll 3/9/09

The National College Baseball Writers Association has published their first weekly Regional update.  NCBWA Regional Poll

This poll is a good barometer to watch as the top 6 teams in the Rocky Mountain (RMAC) and Northern Sun Conferences (NSIC) will face each other in the NCAA Regional Tournament at the end of the season to see which team will advance to the NCAA Division 2 National Tournament.  The NSIC and RMAC conference tournament winners each receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Regional.

As of right now, Mesa State is the clear front runner as they received all 6 first place votes.  The Mavericks are ranked as high as #4 nationally in the most recent College Baseball Newspaper rankings.

Northern Sun Conference teams in the top 10 include Concordia, Wayne State, St. Cloud State, Minnesota State, Augustana and Winona State.
