D2’s St. Augustine – 1 Doubleheader, 2 No-Hitters

St. Augustine College of Cary, NC made big news in college baseball yesterday as the Falcons won both ends of a doubleheader with no-hitters!

The Falcons squared off against a Division 3 team, Lincoln University, and won 10-1 and 25-2.  Lincoln’s only runs came on a couple walks and infield ground out that scored a run in game 1 and a couple free passes along with a couple errors in the 2nd game.

Now admittedly, Lincoln is not very good.  The team is 0-9 on the season and finished last year 1-22-1.  The Falcon’s had 20 stolen bases on the day to give you an idea of the difference in play between the teams.  Even with these impressive wins, St. Augustine only improved their record to 4-8 on the season.

That said, it seems like this is a pretty exceptional feat no matter what the level of competition.  The only other reference to this happening I could find was in reference to a community college team – 3 No-hitters in 2 days  I hardly think that counts as the same.

Here are some of the stories on the accomplishment –

NCAA Division 2 Baseball Rankings – March 9th

The NCAA Division 2 college baseball rankings are out for March 9, 2009.

  • College Baseball News broke its tie at the top this week and their sole occupant of the #1 spot is Cal State Stanislaus. The Warriors swept a 4 game series this week against San Francisco State in convincing fashion.  The poll is still in a serious state of flux as 12 different teams that were ranked in the Top 30 last week have dropped out of this week’s Top 30.  The Northern Sun Conference has no teams in the Top 30 this week but Wayne State, Concordia and St. Cloud State all received 1 vote.  College Baseball News Rankings
  • Ping!Baseball kept Southern Arkansas at the top of their ranking, 1 spot ahead of Stanislaus.  The Muleriders swept 2 games from East Carolina but struggled in a 3 game series against West Florida.  That said, they did end up winning 2 close games to go along with a 6-0 blanking by the Argonauts.  There are no Northern Sun teams in the Top 30.  Ping!Baseball Rankings

Later today or early tomorrow, the National College Baseball Writers Association Division 2 poll will be release along with their first Regional D2 Poll.  I’ll include the link to that poll along with the new Northern Sun D2 Poll which will combine all 3 into a master ranking.

There were 5 Northern Sun Conference baseball teams in action over the weekend:

  • Minnesota State (4-6) kicked off their spring trip in Florida with a pair of games against #5 ranked Grand Valley State and came away with split (3-9, 5-4).  Second game starter, Patrick Lenton, pitched a complete game to lead the Mavericks to victory – Mavericks Split with GVSU.  Yesterday, they also split a doubleheader, losing to Ashland by a score of 6-4 before winning against Assumption, 11-7.  In the win against Assumption, Minnesota State got homers from Ben Kincaid and Geno Glynn.  Cody Hallahan picked up the win while freshman Blake Schwartz pitched the last 3 innings of no hit, 7 strike out ball to get his first collegiate save – Mavericks Lose One, Win One
  • Wayne State (4-3) had a lopsided win and a lopsided loss on Saturday.  In their early game they were led by a balanced offensive attack which included 14 hits.  Freshman pitcher Eric Schwieger pitched 5 innings, giving up only 1 run, to get his 2nd win in his 2nd collegiate start.  Balanced Hitting Carries Wayne St.  In the night cap, they faced Southern Indiana for the 2nd straight day and while the Friday game was close, this one wasn’t.  The Wildcats gave up 16 runs, committed 3 errors (leading to 9 unearned runs) and managed only 5 hits resulting in a 16-2 loss – Southern Indiana Blasts Wayne St.
  • St. Cloud State (12-4) went 2-0 over the weekend with a couple lopsided wins over D3 teams.  The team opened their spring trip in Phoenix, AZ with a 22-4 win over R.I.T. on Saturday and then destroyed Rockford yesterday 20-0.  Hot Hitting Continues for SCSU  The continue play today with a doubleheader against conference foe Northern State.
  • Speaking of the Northern State Wolves (2-3), they also opened spring break play with a win in Phoenix.  Northern beat North Park University by a score of 6-4.  Brock Pashen picked up his first win on the season, pitching the first 7.2 innings and the Wolves were led on offense by Aaron Kappes who was 2-5 including a home run.  Wolves Open With Win
  • Finally, Bemidji State (7-10) has now lost 3 games in the past 3 days.  The weekend games were both nail biters but both ended up on the wrong end of the ledger for the Beavers.  On Saturday, Bemidji State has a 7-6 lead going into the bottom of the 9th but gave up a 2 run single in that frame to lose 8-7 to Drury University – Ninth Inning Rally Lifts Drury  On Sunday, the Beavers battled back from a 6-1 deficit to score 1 in the 8th inning and 4 runs in the bottom of the 9th to send it to extra innings.  Unfortunately, Arkansas Tech scored 2 in the top of the 11th inning to win 8-6 – Beavers Drop 11 Inning Marathon
