Buildings, Games, Stats & Upsets

While the start to the 2009 season for the Upper Iowa University Peacocks has not gone as planned, there was excitement in the air yesterday as the team announced plans for a new indoor practice facility and team clubhouse to be built along the current stadium’s right field wall.  The facility will include a workout area with 2 – 80′ batting cages and a real clay pitching mound, athletic trainer area, team lockers, restrooms, team lounge and offices.  The 2nd floor lounge area will have field side windows that will allow donors and supporters to watch the game from indoors.  They need to raise $400,000 to make it a reality.  Here is the announcement with more details and artists renderings – Upper Iowa – Building the Future

On the field yesterday, Northern Sun teams lost all 4 non-conference games played –

  • The Mary Marauders (3-11) finished the last games of their spring trip to Arizona with 1-0 & 2-0 losses to Malone.  The team finished 2-6 on their trip.
  • Bemidji State (7-8) played Washburn University for the 5th time this season and their 14-4 loss makes the season series 4-1 in favor of the Ichabods.  The Beavers had taken a 4-3 lead but gave up 4 runs in the 5th inning and 7 in the 9th to seal the game.  Washburn over Beavers
  • Finally, for the 2nd time this year, #24 ranked Wayne State (3-2) drops a game based on their defense.  In a season opening loss, the Wildcats had 6 errors.  Yesterday, they only had 1 error but it was very costly.  A dropped fly ball in the 7th inning allowed Southern Indiana to score the winning run and the Screaming Eagles topped Wayne State 5-4. I know there are a number of coaches that drop by this blog.  Boyd’s World has done some analysis of Division 1 college baseball stats to analyze scoring statistics which I found interesting.

The following table shows the percentage of time that a team will score “at least” one run for a situation.  Division 2 coaches may want to measure these types of statistics for their own team.  It does go to show how important it is to get the leadoff runner on base.  There are additional stats found here – Boyd’s World Scoring Statistics

Finally, there was a big upset yesterday in Division 1 college baseball as Illinois upset #1 ranked LSU by the score of 3-1.  Illinois Stuns #1 LSU
