Winona State’s Tony Mueller Off to Blazing Start

Anthony Mueller

The Winona State Warriors (4-6) wrapped up their spring trip yesterday with a pair of wins to finish the trip on an up note.  While I could talk about their 10-9 win over Muskingum College (Warriors Win in 11 Innings) or their 5-3 win over Division 3’s #5 ranked Heidelberg (Warriors Knock Off Heidelberg) I feel compelled to draw even more attention to Tony Mueller.  The freshman center fielder from La Crosse, WI is off to an amazing start to his college career.

  • He was 5-9 in the 2 games yesterday and LOWERED his average to .615 (24 hits in 39 at bats)
  • In 9 games he has hit safely in every single game and got more than 1 hit in 8 of them.  He’s actually got 3+ hits in 6 of the 9 contests
  • He leads the team in runs scored, RBI’s (as a lead off hitter) and stolen bases (5 for 5)
  • He has 1 of the teams 2 home runs

The lone blemish on his stats was the one game he started as pitcher where he struggled.  Maybe head coach Kyle Poock should have let him hit in that game and they would have scored enough runs to help him get the win.  Of course he did come back yesterday and pitched the final inning against Heidelberg to preserve the win and get his first college save so that first start might have just been an aberration.

While one would certainly expect him to cool off he’s on a pace that would obliterate a number of Northern Sun records.
