Where Northern Sun Stands

It’s starting to heat up outside and that’s a good thing as the start of Northern Sun Conference baseball games is 3 weeks from tomorrow!

With 5 weeks already gone in the non-conference portion of the schedule we still can’t draw a lot of conclusions about how the Conference schedule will play out.

  • When you take out the 17 non-conference games that Northern Sun teams have played against each other, the overall record is 31-37
  • There have been a number of good wins against ranked opponents but there have been a lot of head scratchers too
  • It’s really hard to get a read on some teams –
    • Conference favorite Wayne State has only played 4 games against a mediocre opponent
    • Conference leader, Concordia, has played 6 games against non-D2 level teams
    • All of Upper Iowa’s games have come against ranked opponents and the rest were cancelled
    • Southwest Minnesota State hasn’t even started playing games yet

The pace of games being played is going to pick up in coming weeks as teams head to warmer climates for spring trips that pack 2 games in per day for multiple days in a row.  To recap yesterday:

  • For the 2nd time this season, first against Mary and now Augustana, Minnesota Duluth capitalized on a 7th inning error to come from behind and win a game.  Yesterday, they scored 3 in the 7th against the Augies to win 10-9.  Senior David Olson had 3 hits including a 3 run homer in the first inning – UMD Earns 10-9 Victory
  • Concordia swept 2 games from Mayville State with NSIC Pitcher of the Week, Ben Lemke, getting his 2nd win – Golden Bears Scrape Out a Sweep
  • Going back to Wednesday, the Bemidji Pioneer informed everyone that the Beavers’ sweep of Minnesota State was the first time they had pulled such a feat since 1963 and the first win against the Mavericks since 1978 – Beavers Sweep First Since 1963
