Thursday-Friday Recap & Saturday Preview

Old Baseballs

Since my last update a number of additional games have taken place at the Metrodome with results that would surprise no one.

  • Minnesota Crookston came very close to beating Dakota State in their season opener on Thursday but ended up losing 3-2.  They then lost the 2nd game 5-2.  On Friday they played Bemidji State and got beaten handily by scores of 10-1 and 11-5.  Crookston – Dakota State Recap  Crookston – Bemidji State Recap
  • Bemidji State also got into the swing of games with 2 games each on Thursday and Friday at the dome.  On Thursday they played 2 games against the Northern State Wolves where they lost the opening game 9-8 but came back to win the nightcap 7-2.  With their Friday sweep of Crookston, the Beavers are off to a 3-1 start to the season.  Bemidji State Recap
  • The University of Mary started their season on Friday with a double header against Concordia – St. Paul.  In the first game the Marauders fared the same as Northern State did when facing the Golden Bears as Concordia didn’t allow a run and won the game 4-0.  Mary was able to finally dent Concordia’s pitching staff in the 2nd game but still lost 8-3.  U of Mary Recap
  • Minnesota Duluth will kick off their season today against the University of Mary with a doubleheader at the dome.  They have a very nice preview of their season and series here – Duluth Preview   This is the first time that these 2 teams have ever met.  In other Duluth news, the Bulldogs have replaced Dakota State on Concordia’s schedule and the 2 teams will now play a pair of games this Tuesday at 9am in the Metrodome.  $5 to see 2 games seems like a pretty good piece of value – Concordia Announces Schedule Change

So far this season Concordia’s pitchers and defense have showen up for every game playing tremendous as the scores of their 1st 4 games show. CU didn’t give up a single run to start the season till there was 1 out in the 5th against Mary, that made it 25.1 scoreless innings before they ever gave up a single run this year. In total CU has only gave up 3 runs in 28-innings!

Getting the W (CU 4-MARY 0)for CU in the first game was Austrelian native Chris Kimpton who fanned 8 in 4 scoreless innings giving up 2 hits and 2 walks on 69 pitches with 43 thrown for strikes. This was Kimpton’s first W in 9 starts with CU. Kimpton gave way to FR. Ben Lemke(also plays on the CU football team) who pitched 3 scoreless innings giving up 2 hits, O walks, 0 runs, and 2K on 42 pitches with 27 being strikes, while getting his 1st career Save in his first career outing. Leading CU in hitting for the game was (SO)C Sam Fagely who went 2-3 with a pair of triples, 1 RBI, and 1Run. Also helping in CU scoreing was (FR)SS Lippincott 1-4 1run, (SO)LF Jon Stockton 2-3 1RBI 1Run, and (JR)2B Chase Brown 1-3 1Run.

In game 2 SR. pitcher Aaron Pfalzgraff took a No-Hitter in to the 5th inn. before giving up 3 runs on 4 hits. Pfalzgraff still got the W for the game in 4.1 innings of work giving up 4 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 4 K on 80 pitches 51 of those being Ks. Coming in for relif was Kirk Ingram who pitch the remaining 1.2 inn. giving up 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, and 1 K on 17 pitches with 13 being Ks. CU got W number 4 with a 8-3 score over Mary which was Powered by the bat of NSIC Preseason Pithcer of the Year (SR) Jake Schmidt who went 2-3 2Run, 4RBI with 3 of those coming off his 3-run BLAST to Left-Center. For the game CU had 6 different runners score at least 1 run.

Some interesting side facts so far on the early CU season:

*CU is batting .380 while holding their Opponets to .184
    *CU ERA 1.00 Opponets 11.88
*CU has 5 Triples in 4-games
*CU has been HBP 9 times in 4-games
*CU pitchers are avg. 1.26 Ks per inn. which comes to be 8.5 Ks per game
*CU has gone 27inn. without given up a single extra-base hit
*CU already has 8SB which is 2 shy of the half way point(10) of total SB they had all of last year in only 4games in this young season

      Thanks CU.

Interesting stuff. I was impressed to see Ben Lemke have a good outing his first time out – he’s a player I know well.
