Concordia & Northern State Kick Off Seasons

Concordia  northern state

One of the pre-season conference favorites, Concordia of St. Paul, kicks off their season tonight with a double header against conference foe Northern State University.  The games are at 6pm and 8:30pm at the Metrodome and count as non-conference games.

Concordia enters the season picked to finish among the conference’s top 3 teams in a tight race with Wayne State and Minnesota State – Mankato – Preseason NSIC Poll.  They also feature both the preseason NSIC player of the year in Brenden Furrow and preseason NSIC pitcher of the year, Jake Schmidt.  Those 2 players helped lead the Golden Bears to victory in the Northern Sun conference playoffs where they knocked out top seeded Wayne State and advanced to the NCAA Regional Tournament for the first time in school history – Concordia Advances to NCAA’s

The Northern State University Wolves are picked to finish near the bottom of the pack for 2009.  They will be especially challenged to have lost their best player and leader, Adam Kampsen, the 2008 NSIC Co-player of the Year.

The games are being broadcast by Concordia so if anyone feels the interest in listening they can be found here – Concordia Radio Broadcast

Augustana Pitcher Nears Record

Augie Logo

Augustana continued it’s Arkansas road trip on Tuesday with a double header against Harding University.  This was the Augie’s 4th and 5th games in a 3 day span so they are having to dig deep into their pitching staff to get through this stretch.

The team ended with a split as they lost the first game 9-3 but came back and won the second game 9-7 with a 2 run 2 out rally in the final inning.  In the first game, Harding had their way at the plate as they scored 9 times in the first 5 innings.  The Augies move to 3-2 on the season and finish their Arkansas adventure with a final 9 inning tilt this afternoon before heading back to South Dakota.  The recap can be found here – Augies Split With Harding

As for the “near record” I mentioned – in the 2nd game, Augustana’s starting pitcher, Ezra Campbell, was charged with 6 wild pitches (in just 4.1 innings!).  I was struck by how large that number was so I looked it up and the record for wild pitches in a single Division 2 baseball game is 7 by Jeff Sparks of West Texas A&M in 1994.  Since 7 is the record and Ezra had 6 it’s probably safe to say that he has at least tied or set a new Northern Sun Conference record.  It wasn’t a good game for either team’s pitchers & catchers as the teams combined for 10 total wild pitches.  The NCAA record books can be found here – NCAA Baseball Records

Northern Sun Blog Gets Attention

image

One thing that’s interesting about the idea of doing a blog is that you have this hope that somebody out there will care about your effort.  Now it’s quite early in this blog’s existence but this spot has already received some attention.

Yesterday, I got around to posting my site on Google so that I could try and get into their search engine and also posted the address on a few message boards.  My traffic shot off the roof by a factor of 8!  Considering my previous high was 3 that wasn’t hard to do.  But what really got me a little excited was the following:

  • Comments were posted for the first time – interacting with other fans who are passionate about baseball is something that is always fun
  • The blog received a link on an established college baseball blog.  I’m not sure how he found me but I started getting traffic from Big Ten Hardball – Big Ten Hardball
  • I received an e-mail from a former Northern Sun assistant coach who now coaches in a different D2 conference.  He liked what I was doing so he could follow his former team and wished someone in his conference would do the same.

What I’m trying to say is – I appreciate the feedback 🙂
