Northern Sun Roster Analysis

As the Northern Sun Baseball season is poised to take off it’s an interesting exercise to take a look at the current rosters listed for each team (U-Mary doesn’t have theirs listed yet).

Roster sizes vary from the mid-20’s (Crookston/Concordia) to the mid-40’s.  A few interesting observations –

  • Almost every team has more freshman than anything else.  A number of these kids are walk-on’s and red shirts but it’s quite likely that a lot of them wash out of the system after the first year.  After that there is a remarkable sameness in the number of Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors.
  • The number of pitchers per team varies from 11-20.  Typically, about 40-50% of the roster is made up of pitchers.
  • Bemidji, Concordia, Upper Iowa and Wayne St. have the largest proportion of seniors.  Concordia is known for having the 2 pre-season players of the year who are both seniors.  Based on the size of their roster and the number of seniors it is quite possible that they will see a large decline in success for 2010.
  • Crookston has had very limited success in recent years and the fact that they have such a small roster and such a large number of them are freshman doesn’t give any confidence that this will change in 2009.

I doubt that you will see a large decline in the product and record Concordia will have in 2010. They have a great coaching staff that knows how to bring the best out of their players and also knowing how to use the players they have to win games. Will there be some decline? Maybe, but I still see them being in the hunt for conference title & tourny in 2010 as they had a solid recruiting class this past season and looking like this years has started out well also. FIRST thing First though and that is we still got the 2009 season to play before talking about 2010. Good Luck to everyone especially CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY!!!

Hey CU Pride – welcome! You are my first commenter so you’ve got that going for you 🙂

You are right about 2010 being a long way away. Concordia should definitely be a big part of the picture in the conference this year and is coming off a very successful run last year.

Their current freshman class is decent but I’m not sold on at least 1 of the 3 2010 recruits they signed. With such a small roster they have a smaller margin of error to hit on most of the players on the team.

Thanks again for visiting – please come back and post.

Which player are you not sold on? Why are you not sold on this recruit? Also thanks, and I look forward to reading your post and also making some of my own on here as well. Thanks for creating this site as gives us a place to talk about NSIC baseball.

I’ve already decided that I need to be a little careful on how I handle myself on my own blog – interesting how that works.

I think it’s better that I keep my opinion to myself – makes it better if I turned out to be wrong too 🙂

For the most part I’d rather keep this blog positive in nature. Thanks again – I look forward to having you back – I’m anxious to see how Concordia fares tomorrow.
