The 2010 Northern Sun Conference baseball tournament starts today in St. Cloud, MN at Joe Faber Field. The 6 teams will play a double elimination format tournament which is scheduled to be played Wednesday thru Saturday, with the winner getting an automatic bid into the NCAA Division 2 Baseball Central Region Tournament. In 2009, Minnesota State came in as the 2nd seed, lost their first game and then won 5 straight to win the Tournament Title.

My thanks to Minnesota State for doing a nice little recap of the teams participating which you can see below. You can find more details on each team at their link.

Tournament Website
The NSIC Tournament has its own website where fans can follow along with updated Live Stats and an In Tournament Blog. The Blog is done by St. Cloud State who is hosting the Tourney. They’ve been doing it all year and it’s quite well done and allows fans to interact with the bloggers at the game.
NCAA D2 Baseball News
Also starting on Wednesday is the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference’s baseball tournament. Northern Sun fans may want to keep one eye on the results from Kearney, NE. RMAC 2010 Baseball Tournament
As of last week, teams from the Northern Sun Conference held down spots 2,3 & 5 in the NCAA Central Region Rankings. It’s important to keep 3 of the top 5 spots in case there is an upset in the RMAC or NSIC Tournaments. The winners of the RMAC and NSIC Tournaments each get an automatic bid into the NCAA D2 Central Region Tournament and then the next 4 highest ranked teams are invited. If a team like Wayne State, SMSU or Duluth wins the NSIC title they will knock out team #6 (and something similar can happen in the RMAC). The NCAA will release updated rankings today where I expect Minnesota State will jump ahead of St. Cloud and Winona State but the key is whether the NSIC teams stay ahead of Mesa State. NCAA D2 Regional Rankings
Finally, the NCAA has updated their D2 Notebook which describes how Southern Arkansas has fallen out of the #1 position in the polls. More importantly, Catawba won the Southern Atlantic Baseball Tourney and is the first team to gain an automatic qualifier into the D2 Regional Tournaments. NCAA D2 Notebook
Winona State beats Southwest Minnesota State 8-6 in game #1 of the NSIC Tourney. The Mustangs scored 5 runs in the top of the 9th to make a game of it but their rally fell short.
Winona’s win was fueled by starting pitcher Tony Mueller on the mound and at the plate. The sophomore from La Crosse, WI pitched the first 7 innings, giving up just 4 hits and 1 run. At the plate he was 2 for 4 with 3 runs scored.
Mueller pitched a gem of a game. Terrible conditions, but nothing you could do about it. Mustangs had go ahead run at plate in ninth but couldnt quite finish the comeback
Minnesota State wins game #2 with a 7-4 win over Wayne State. The Wildcats staked an early 4-0 lead but a 7 run inning by the Mavericks in the bottom of the 4th inning would be all the scoring left in the game. http://www.msumavericks.com/news/2010/5/5/BB_0505101112.aspx
Wednesday’s games end with the days first upset as Minnesota Duluth knocks off St. Cloud by the score of 8-3.
Tomorrow’s games are –
Noon – Wayne State vs. SW Minnesota State – loser goes home
3:30 – Minnesota State vs. St. Cloud State – grudge match from last weekend
7pm – Winona State vs. Minnesota Duluth – only game of 2 undefeated teams
Actually, there has been a change in tomorrows schedule due to nighttime weather concerns. The noon and 3:30 games stay the same, but the 7 o’clock game will now be played at 3:00 at Putz field.
Thanks 54 – looks like they moved the MSU/SCSU game up a half hour too:
St. Cloud State will now play top-seeded Minnesota State (37-12) at 3:00 p.m. tomorrow and the Winona State game at 7 p.m. against Minnesota Duluth has been moved to 3:00 p.m. at Putz Field tomorrow due to weather concerns.
Results from day 1 of the RMAC Tourney (all the higher seeds won) –
May 5th
Game 3 – # 3 seed Mesa State vs. # 4 seed Metro State, Mesa wins 16-15
Game 1 – # 1 seed N.M. Highlands vs. # 6 seed Regis, NMH wins 18-4
Game 2 – # 2 seed UNK Vs. # 5 seed CSU-Pueblo, UNK wins 5-1
All Conference and player of the year, pitcher of the year, newcomer are posted on the NSIC home page
Think I beat you to the punch on posting them on the main page. Congrats to Bryan for being named 2nd team!
Southwest Minnesota State scores 11 combined runs in the 7th & 8th innings to end Wayne State’s season with a 13-2 win.
A 6th place finish in the NSIC and 2 straight losses in the Tourney are not what Wildcat fans envisioned at the start of the season.
